What powder???

Probably a non-canister grade powder. Meaning you can't buy the exact same powder over the counter.

Try using Reloder-15, Varget, or IMR/H-4895. All of these powders deliver good accuracy, and are available over the counter.

great advance above. i have copy loads with both re-15 and varget. 2700 fps exactly in my 26' barrel. tiny

69g 223, I cant say, but I use Varget for that round.

I did dissect a 150g 308 Fed GMM, and it had 44,0g of Varget, but this was about 5 years ago.

Its not vary scientific, but this is how I did it.
I pulled the bullet, and weighed the charge, then compared the looks of the powder with all of the other powders I had on hand, and it looked just like varget. So then, using the calipers, I measured several individual grans of the two powders using an eye lope, and they looked the same, and were the same size. I then looked in several loading books to see if that charge of Varget was OK with that bullet weight, and it was. So the last step was to make several rounds using Varget, then shooting both the Fed GMM, and my duplicate rounds over my Crony, and the speed was the same. So I deduced that, that Fed round had Varget in it.

Pull one apart and look at it, weigh it, and check the reloading manuals. It may/may not be a canister powder but you should be able to get pretty close. But doing your own load workup should get you better results anyway. Also, you might try just calling the company and ask. I've done it and they told me exactly what powder was used.

Good luck finding ANY powder!

It's available. Supplies are down but I got a couple kegs last month mailorder. Also saw a bunch of it a few days ago in the gunshop. Still there was some joker on here not long ago trying to sell powder for $495/keg. Trying to cash in on people's sense of fear. Can you imagine that?

When I inquired of Federal years ago as to what powder they were using in their Gold Medal match ammunition, they told me they use a 'blend' that could not be bought by the general public.

Varget works well in the .223 with Sierra 69 gr. Match Kings. Unfortunately Varget is terrible to throw in any powder measure so you'll end up weighing each charge. In my .223's I've switched to AA 2520. Goes through the powder measure like water, and after weighing fifty powder charges in a row there was only a spread of 1/10th grain. Not perfect I know, but one heck of a lot better than Varget.

If you think Varget is hard to measure, try using H4064, its almost impossible.
When I use Varget I throw them .5g light, and trickle every one on an electronic scale anyway, so it doesn't matter to me. Varget is to to good of a powder to not use, for a slight metering reason. Plus I believe weighing every load make more accurate ammo, with lower ES & SDs.
But thats just me.
Mike.

I agree Varget is a great powder. However when you are loading for semi-autos you might be better served by something that meters a bit better.

Dittos on using an easy-metering powder. I have to trickle up the charges for all my mid & long-range ammo,4 Dashers, 3 6x47s, a 6XC, 250AI, 6.5x55, 6.5x55AI, and two 284s); there's just no time, even if I had the patience) to weigh individual charges for shortline,200&300yd) & practice ammo. Ramshot TAC works great with 68-80gr. bullets in a 223, and is slightly finer than than 2520, so it meters beautifully. Plus, it's not anywhere near as temp. sensitive as a lot of the older ball powders.
