What Pillars to use?

Nice Work! Tell me (us), how do you get that beautiful transition of bedding material to stock at the barrel/receiver joint? I always struggle with that area.

I try to control how much will actually float out in that area....then I use a core box bit in the mill to clean the majority up, after that a little light sanding is all.

Well, now since that's settled. What bedding compound do you guys like? I used Devcon in previous attempts, it did pretty well.

I use 1/8" brass or bronze (check your local marine supply house) pipe nipples. I cut them to length with a hack saw and trim them up with a file by chucking them in a table top drill press.

What do you guys use a release agent.? I used the kiwi shoe polish as recommended in Richard Franklin's article.

Like others I to machine my own pillars. I use Devcon as my bedding material.

Any non compressible material is suitable for pillars. In some wood stocks where I dont want to make the screw holes alot bigger do to weakening the wood and most likely causing a crack down the road, I will drill the screw holes to 7/16 and fill with epoxy and proceed with the bedding. You end up with a pillar of epoxy around the screw. I prefer this on a wood sporter stock, seen too many crack into the trigger mortise when opened up for a 1/2 or 9/16 pillar. I much prefer Marine tex, it flows better and is much nicer on cutting tools. If your using a mill to clean up the bedding you will love marine tex after using devcon. I personally dont like the pillars to contact the action and cut them at least .050" short. See a little better numbers this way on a dial indicator. It may be better all together to recess the top of the pillar to promote better contact with the rest of the bedding. Epoxy will shrink and pull away from the action. A pillar will not. A little studying will show most bedding jobs only really contact just above the pillars.
