What mat or pad to put under a joy pod?

I am getting a joy pod and wanted to know what people are using under the bipod. I have been using a piece of carpet under the Sinclair bipod. Any advice would be appreciated.

I went ahead after talking with Ernie and got the Pod Pad with mine, but I wont have it until next week. He said he thinks it really helps reduce any hop. We'll see. Now I guess I have to order more heavy sand. :(

You can actually use any mat (or any material of your preference) under the Joypod.

I used a Joypod & Podpad combo for the first time in a F/TR match (QLD Queens, Brisbane), last August 2014.
I was lucky enough to receive 4 medals (1 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze) against some of the best F/TR shooters in Australia. I shot my first perfect score @ 1,000 yards in that c/ship.

That was the Joypod & Podpad from the first batch.
The newer/2nd batch Joypod & Podpad are generally better than the first batch's.

Do not over-fill the Podpad, that's for sure. Moderate hardness is recommended (not too hard, not too soft/empty). The Podpad's construction + sand inside will absorb over than 50% of the hop/vibration.
You may need to tap the top using your palm so that the top is flat (not bulge) also to make sure that the pad is settled. Then slide the feet/the rifle back & forth before shooting, also to check the straightness of the setup / how it tracks.

I don't shoot much (only shoot/attend overseas match once or twice a year) and wind is not my friend... so I am sure better shooters will get a better result.
If you check-out recent F/TR match results in Australia you will see that the top placing shooters use the Joypod & Podpad 'combos'.

There are some pics & videos in my FB from those who use the Joypods, I just don't feel OK to post them here without their permission so I use mine for your reference/consideration.

If you are interested with the new Podpad, contact the US dealer Ernie Bishop.

That is for a "board", the Podpad is flexible & can be folded.

Properly filled Podpad is about 5/8" - 7/8" thick.

Thanks to Ernie's rapid shipping, I'm also expecting my Joypod/padpod to arrive next week. It's also about 5 months ahead of schedule/anticipated delivery.

Nice business model Ernie/Seb; promise small, deliver big!

Informative and timely posts. Thank you.

Thanks, seb. Can't wait to get it...like a kid at Christmas here! Thought it might be the next shooting season before I got it.

Seb, how thick is this pad when it is properly filled? Seems that the NRA rules don't allow anything over 1/2".

The 1/2" rule applies to boards, so the pod pad has no problem meeting requirements at any fill level.

In the case of a bipod, the board may not exceed the
width of 24” nor depth of 12” and thickness of 1/2”.

Couple of points to consider please - the ICFRA rules now state the front board must be flat top and bottom. 300mm front to rear and no more than 50mm either side of the widest adjustment for the bipod feet.
They also ban any tracking device - I would submit that the Joypod front mat settles into tracking slots for the bipod feet.
We have had some discussion here in Australia over these rules on our forum here.
The best situation is to have one set of rules for all - ICFRA please?
No sense having one for OZ, another for USA and then International rules?
Cheers

True...but those specifications are for the "board". The rules also state:
"Any number or type of objects may be placed beneath the bipod or rear support, to compensate for variations in height or slope of the firing point."

As for the tracking, a bare firing point on grass, soil, or gravel, or even a low pile piece of carpet can form "tracks" after a couple of shots with a heavy rifle and I suppose tiny front to back grooves on bi-pod feet could also be construed as "tracking devices" if they got anal about it. Seems that they just want avoid having FTR shooters constructing a "belly bench".

Just my interpretation...which is probably not worth much. ;)

I think Xhuntress nailed it. I also think that the "flat top" statement is referring to the practice of nailing a stop to the board so that the bipod has a reference stop, or something similar.

Like Xhuntress says, I don't see how a pod pad differs from a piece of carpet or a bare firing point in terms of creating "tracks" during a string.

APB, have you seen a Podpad before?

When I used a Podpad in the QLD Queens last August, I still remember that the top of the pad was still flat with no any "sink", "groove", or "tracks", even after I have finished the shooting string. --- In other words, the bipod/feet + rifle combo did NOT create any tracks on the Podpad.
The top material just had a "shiny mark" on each side due to the friction with the bottom of the feet, no more.

IF (just "If") I'm "allowed" to make grooves on the Podpad, I should have made it already, because I am sure it will "help" to track even better.
That was why we put a layer of soft neophrene under the top layer, i.e. to prevent sink/grooves/tracks on the top.
Only for comparison: On a soft ground, or on grass firing point, I might/would choose to not use a Podpad or any mat myself.... you know the reason ;).... even / although not even once my scope "went to" someone else's target after recoil using the bipod + pad combo.

Trust me that LOGIC and COMMON SENSE are (much-much) stronger than the "police men", or the "naysayers".
I learn this from experience.

Had to laugh at this seb...it was only yesterday that I commented to a friend after watching the news that logic and common sense seem to have gone the way of the dinosaurs in this world! Hopefully this will never be the case in the competitive shooting world.

Sorry boss, I did not think about "other things out there", such as politics, silly news, silly rules, etc. (That's why I hate politic & politicians, lol). --- However in the shooting world, I still believe with the logic & common sense.
