What makes h4198 better than the others?

NC/Br Shooter

I know the short answer. What's the other part?
What makes h4198 better than the other powders if you can get zero out of another powder?
Had someone say they'd charge to 4198 if they could but what they were using shot bug holes.
What's the deal?

I would think the fact that most 30BR shooters use H-4198 bringing it the most popularity among them would have something to do with it. But, there has been many wins with it and it may very well be the best for the 30BR. However, getting that zero with other powders prove it works good as well.

If a 30BR won't shoot H4198, it's got issues. In that respect, H4198 is invaluable as a baseline powder for a new build 30BR.

But N130, N120, LT30, H322 (and a few others) have all won in registered competition. With the non-availability of H4198 (it's popping up recently here and there), it's best to just jump right to N130 or LT30 and go from there.

For what it's worth. -Al

It's proven to work well and there is more data from other shooters for it because it's just been done about 500% more than anything else. Sure doesn't hurt that it just works, either. But there are other good options, like Al alluded to.

If anything, as good as it works in a 30BR, it's on the slow end of optimal. Faster options are limited but they can work great too. I love n120 but 130, lt30 and a few others also work great. Look at AA5744. It's bulky but shoots great and you don't need to get quite as much in the case as you do with h4198. The cartridge is very forgiving though, and will shoot several combinations better than most of us can tell a difference in.

All -

Howdy !

Something H4198 might do better is provide hyper-accurate
"'reduced" loads, even lower than reduced charges derived from the H4895 reduced load " formula ".

Lower charges of H4198 ( still safe from approaching
" Secondary Explosive Effects " ) provided superb accuracy in my Marlin M-336 XLR .35 Rem.... outperforming " Trailboss ", SR4759; and H4895 loads.

YRMV ?

I believe that one of the reasons H4198 shoots so well is it's low temperature sensitivity. Since we load ammo many days before a match it just seems to maintain it's load integrity quite well. Hopefully I still have enough to last to the end of my match shooting career.

LT30 is faster burning than N130 so signs should show up quicker. I think a good sub for H4198 is N120 rather than N130 in 30 BR. Careful working up. Measure head diameter just ahead of extractor slot, no more than .0005" expansion is acceptable. Otherwise you'll be replacing brass quickly.

I just got some Lt 30, and some Vv130 today..
I have the option to get some h4198 but its only 3 lbs and probably won't be able to find anymore later down the rd. With Lt30, verses Vv130, which one would show signs of pressure faster? The Lt30?
If someone with a new build/barrel 30BR can snag some H4198, I can't imagine not doing it. o_O

Again...as a powder for establishing a baseline by which to evaluate other powders, I feel it's the Gold Standard. It's also invaluable to go back to down the road if things aren't looking too shiny and you're questioning components/flag reading/bench manners, etc.

Why bother if that's all you could get? Say 3 lbs

There has been some one pound bottles of H4198 showing up the last few months.

I will add that not all barrels shoot Lt30, N130 and H4198 the same based on my very limited experience (four different barrels.) All of my barrels have shot H4198 well.

Shot this with V133 35g. Yesterday. Had ten shots and shot these two 4 shot groups. First shots for this barrel. 133 was all I had at the time. Yall were right about 30br being amazing. I just had turned a few cases the night before, and got it all ready. Never any of my 6br,or 6bra ever had the first shot groups to be that close. Iv had a over 15 barrels past few years with different cartridges.

The 30BR will reach out and grab you if you like the tiny groups.
