What kind or type matches are open/peep type sights only?

I have never been to a shooting competition. But interested.
One question what kind or type matches are open/peep type sights only (no scopes)?

Well there is a lot of them, smallbore matches that just shoot iron, however often for prone there is an optical match but you can just shoot irons. For high power rifle there is across the course matches (200, 300 and 600) with a service rifle(AR15, M1A or a M1 Garand) or a match rifle with irons sights(usually a match version of an AR 15 also known as a space gun or a bolt action rifle such as 700's and 70's or Tube/Tubb guns). For high power long range(800-1000 yards) there is once again service rifle and Palma which is a 308/223 with iron sights, all shot prone.

Now the above mentioned all are sling supported positions, except for standing section in a across the course match, which means you wrap your arm in the sling and it provides tension for support. Basically no rests/bipods/tables for support.

There are also several Silhouette Disciplines that shoot iron Sights as well. BPCRS has both an iron only class as well as a scope class requiring "Of the Period type Scopes" that is 3/4" straight tubes only. Lever Gun Silhouette and small bore silhouette also only allow iron sights. Then there are the BPCR long range and Creedmore shoots. There is also Schuetzen that is still alive and well and is Iron sights.

lots of choices for those who shun Scopes...

National Match (NMC) 200, 300 & 600 yards. Palma 1000 yards. But the most fun of all is Infantry Team Trophy (ITT). No sighters, no scopes (spotting or rifle), no shooting mats, one pair of binoculars per team. 600 to 200 yards, all rapid fire. In the 1930s it was shot with '03s and one BAR per team. DCM issued BARs to civilian teams. Now, that must have been fun.

As Roland said, metallic silhouette match's, sanctioned by the NRA, and you can earn a classification, Marksman to Master. Smallbore & Pistol cartridge are fired at 40,50,75 & 100 meters, open sights mandatory. A good way to get started in silhouette. Most everybody has a rifle that would be legal, low ammunition cost, and long distances not required. Forgot to mention: All firing is off-hand, unsupported, slings not permitted. 2 minute time limit to fire 5 shots, steel targets must be knocked down left to right. Knockdown 10 in a row & get a 10 in a row pin. Scores kept by the NRA, knock-down 10 in a row of each of the 4 target types and get the Grand Slam trophy from the NRA.

losthwy: Cowboy lever-action are very popular in my area with match's at various clubs just about every weekend during the Summer. Thompson Centenders are very popular for the handgun match's, and many of us are using the Marlin 39-A for smallbore and Marlin 1894 for pistol cartridge. .357's are heavily represented in the match's

Chicken silhouette's at 40 mtrs, Pigs at 50, Turkey's at 75 & Rams at 100. Kind of neat when you fire & a second later see the steel silhouette fall off the rail. A different perspective from punching holes in a traditional paper target

All match's begin with firing at the chickens, then progressing to the further targets. 30 second prep period during which time the firearm can be handled & loaded, then 2 minutes to fire. Magazine firearms must be loaded with 5 rounds, a total of 40 rounds fired in each individual match.

If you are interested, suggest you go to a local match, watch the match in progress & ask questions of competitors when they are not shooting.
