What kind of Cream of Wheat???

What type of Cream of Wheat are you guys using for your case forming? My store only carries the instant and 2 minute stuff. The malt o meal brands all have a bunch of other ingredients and don't seem like a good choice. Can you still get old fashion COW? Also, do you ever have problems with the COW sticking inside the cases?

Oatmeal also works, I like to compact up to the bottom of the case neck then cap off with some modeling clay, if you go that route make sure you clean the necks off any extra clay.

the maple flavor works pretty well... mixes nicely with the smell of titewad when fired.

DO NOT use instant COW. I saw a M77 Ruger blown all to hell by a guy using instant.

Is the "2" minute COW the "non instant" type? Someone have a box they can check? I can see not using sugar added types etc.

The brand I've used is Great Value and it says "Quick Farina" hot cereal. Have done boatloads of cases with the same stuff with nary a problem.

My box says 2 1/2 minute cook time on front. Does not say instant. Used it a few weeks ago for fireforming and it works just fine. Some of the cases will have a small amount stick on inside shoulder. A bent paper clip takes it right out. Go with the 2 minute, it is proven.

...darn, and I wanted to try the Cinnabon flavored C.O.W. Thought it'd smell real nice early in the morning after coffee! ;D in all seriousness, use any that doesn't have add'l sugar-based ingredients that could lead to deposits.

cow will "cook" and stick to the inside of the shoulder and can be a REAL problem to get out and if you don't know it's there and load some the same, you can get a variety of mvs and groups esp if the case is small. the hooked paper clip will work but some is so hard i'v had to use something stiffer. to prevent this inside neck caking in 6 BR size cases i'v started using only 1/2 case of cow and fill to top with shot buffer then cotton or lanolin or wax. thus far none of these have had the caking. someone pointed out that cow contains salt (nacl) and if left will rust the bore.

Thanks guys. I tried some 2min COW. Fired them into an old sleeping bag stuffed inside a small metal drum. Made it pretty quiet in the garage. I had the COW just at the shoulder/neck junction and topped with TP. It pushed the shoulders out nice but left heavily caked COW inside the shoulder. Had to use a dental pick to get it out. I try tried wiping some imperial size wax inside the shoulder with a q-tip and that helped. I gave up on it after about fifteen rounds. It turned into too much work and worry. I just get to thinking about the impact/blast effect of this stuff going down my barrel. I can't help but think its got to be wearing on the throat of barrel. I ran out of time last week and this weekend I'm going to put the bore scope in the barrel and see what it looks like.

Let us know. I'm about to do my first COW using some cleaning pellets for my plug. Haven't bought/decided on the inert filler yet.

Just don't go using my grits. That would hurt my feelings and most of the southern boys.

Seriously, grits do a great job but are sometimes hard to find above the Mason Dixon. Polenta is the same I think.

Why mess with cow when there's blue dot and a small piece of paper towel ? I like the no mess easy cleanup .

I cleaned the barrel really good this weekend and ran my bore scope in it to look for any "softening" of the edges on the rifling or anything else unusual and it all looked pretty good. Nothing more than a really clean barrel. That from only about 15 rounds and I don't know what 185 more would do but for now, I think I'll skip the mess and just shot a bullet to fire form.
