What just happened?

i was outside cycling rounds through a rifle to check feeding with a magazine and the third round went into the chamber and that's it! The bolt will not go down and the bolt will not come back to eject. There is still a lot of "play" in the bolt body but that's all she wrote! Almost like the headspace changed and now it is stuck. What to do now? I can't get the bolt back to get a action wrench in.

Get a dead blow hammer and tap it back. What's to lose, you knock the bolt handle off.... What type rifle, what make? Don't try and push a rod down the barrel to tap it out, definitely too dangerous.

You blow any primers lately?

Sometimes a cup or anvil gets loose, then ends up in a critical clearance area at the worst possible moment.

Can you disassemble the bolt while it's stuck? Some action designs are better suited to this than others. Removing the firing pin before applying hammer force to the bolt handle is usually a good idea.

Then there's the old-school 'bump the butt' on the ground trick, let inertia have a go at getting that bolt moving backwards. Sometimes one bump's enough, sometimes it takes several.

Be careful though with a loaded round up the pipe.

Live rounds or dummy ? Do NOT use a rod down the barrel without proper precautions and the understanding the round may go off . Which would be dangerous to you and rifle . Use a dead low hammer , rubber mallet or a piece of wood .

I agree with SpClark. Push back on the bolt handle while bumping it down on the butt. Might want to look at the trimming to length of the cartridge.

Well I got it out useing the dead blow ( that always makes me nervous!!) and the case "looks" fine. Brass measures 2.496 I think most new 7RM brass is 2.500. There was nothing in the chamber, but she is going to get a deep cleaning! I haven't shot this rifle in a while, I lend it to a buddy for a PRS match a few weeks ago, maybe it's just dirty.

If anyone has to do this get a block of wood and go to the root of the bolt handle, close to the stock and tap. That really reduces the risk of the handle coming off. Big hammers, even dead blow hammers on the knob don't play well together.

I've got a piece of oak shaped for rem bolt handles , it's in my range box . Thankfully not for me anymore , been shootin Savages .

I would make sure the bolt is all the way up and tap it with a block of wood. If it is the bullet that is stuck it will stay in the barrel and the case will come back. Then you can deal with the bullet . Good luck Larry

caleb85 , check the cases ,sounds like you got a free piece of brass but not from your gun .years ago was shooting on the local range ,finished shooting went home and cleaned gun and brass . at that timei was neck sizing and did not notice the few extre pieces of brass that one of the guys had thrown into my box (same caliber & make ) next visit to the range everything was great , untill i ran the bolt , short story ,,, broke the extractor claw ripped the rim of the case and a live round jammed in the chamber . How i got it out thats an other story, but it involves a lot of sweating and SH**TIN a brick .

I used this rifle in a few F class matches and I know I was the only one there shooting a 7RM so I know it didn't come from there but you have a point!, like I said earlier a shooting buddy of mine took this rifle to a PRS match and it is very possible that extra piece of brass came from there.
