FTW ? "For The Win" ?um, yea.... 308 FTW
Have you moved on from the 284 Shehane? If you primarily shoot at a range where the wind is almost always huffing and puffing, a larger cartridge would be preferable to a smaller one, no matter the distance.. However, if you shoot at a range where the wind is primarily "easy going", a very accurate 6mm or 6.5 may take the prize quite often. Times are such now that 597-600s are the NORM at 600 yards and having a rifle capable of attaining a HIGH "X" count has a distinct advantage. At 1000 yards, even under "relatively light" winds, a larger cartridge, as long as it's accurate, will "generally" beat out the smaller ones. Get winds from 10m.p.h. on up at 1000 and you REALLY are at a great disadvantage with smaller cartridges. If you want to be at the pinnacle of 1000 yard cartridges, a 7 S.A.U.M IMP., shooting the 195 Bergers simply can not be matched! At 600 yards, under "normal" conditions, it would be extremely difficult to beat a .260A.I. or a 6.5 x 284>>>having said that, a 6 Dasher will certainly hold it's own and take home the gold enough of the time to make happy the shooter!
I spent a little over a year trying to get away from the BIG guns.. I tried using only 6mms and 6.5mms from 500 to 1000 yards at various clubs in vastly differing conditions. It became very apparent that 6.5s on down, although very capable to 600 yards, lack substantially past that location. Prior to going small, and only for a short "spell", I went to the 7mm SAUM, an excellent cartridge indeed! However, 850-1100 round barrel count was not palatable to me. Since the year "in the small cartridge saddle", I am now in the process of finishing up a .300WSM. It is a bit shy of the SAUM using the 195s, however, it is close. The 2000 round barrel count is what sent me to the .300.. The 284 / Shehane / Walker are very good and will net you close to 2000 rounds. However, the 215s at 2910 outclass them and comes very close to the SAUM using the 195s and you still get 2000 rounds! That is my reasonong at least why I abandoned the 7s and went to a .30 cal..Have you moved on from the 284 Shehane?
Shooters that have the skills to drive one accurately don't think so...308’s are just boring...
Just read what has done all the wining
It some form of a 6mm
Weird, last I checked, the last 4 F-open 1000 yard NR holders were all shooting 7's. I didn't bother going further back than that.
Maybe you were thinking Benchrest.
Better tell that to my 300 WSM. It doesn't seem to listen to that. MattJust read what has done all the wining
