What is your favorite brass, and why?

I suppose this is something of a poll. I've been reading a bit while the weather is bad and it's brought up a few questions. Brass cases, for one.

Just curious how some of you choose what you do and why.

Thanks for looking.
Have to say Lapua is the favorite for me. Although there are other good brass on the market now nothing I have tried seems to be as good. Peterson would be my second choice because I have have some good experience with it in couple or three different calibers. Starline would be my third choice. Tried Alpha in my 260AI and it was a total disappointment as of course the run of the mill stuff Nosler, Norma, Federal, Hornady, WIn. & Rem. all fit onto the bottom rung of the ladder for me. Just my opinion and everybody knows the saying there.

I 100% agree with Bill. Not totally written in stone but for the most part I won’t build a rifle that I can’t get Lapua brass for and definitely for my benchrest guns. Peterson I have found to be very good, if it was a bigger cartridge RWS would be my second choice. I do use other brass but only because I’ve owned it for years. For pistols I’m not picky but if I’m buying new I been looking for starline

I am only loading for varmint grade accuracy, not competition. I only use virgin case and dedicate them to a specific rifle.

If you can tolerate the sometimes 5% manufacturing defects which render those cases unloadable, Winchester, has been the most consistent for me. Hornady and Federal also has been adequate with zero manufacturing defects.

The most inconsistent has been Remington and I cannot tell you why. But it often takes several firings and sizing to establish any consistent case head space. On one lot, the end of the necks at the opening were not flat. No big deal since I trimmed them but weird to say the least.

I have some Starline rifle cases but have yet to load them. If they are as good as its pistol cases, it should be a winner.

I started with winchester. didnt know any better at the time, but it was ok for my skill at the time.
Then I started neck turning it after sorting for wall thickness. less than .001 was 600, less than .002 was 300, and more than .002 was for 200. Well that got old quick. then I started seeing flash holes not center, and a notch cut on one side. sent it back to sinclair. Replaced it with lapua, was expecting to do the sort and turn, but it was all less than .001. never looked back. I have some norma i got when you couldnt get 223, and it measured out ok. less than .001. I have recently gotten a dasher, and peterson and alfa brass for it, and it all measures .0005. good stuff.
It just amazes me why a large company that has made brass for so long why they cant make it quality. I have looked at the bags at cabalas and there flash holes are still off center. I think that punch guy has been asleep for years.

Howdy !

I like to “ wildcat “, an my brass preferences have been effected by that.

For my “.22-35 Remington “ wildcat, I only use Remington proprietary .35 Remington brass. It had the greatest case capacity of all .35 Remington case brands, when I first formed my wildcat cases; and simply stuck with a Remington brand since then.
Quality of Remington brass has always been great. I search out this brand, to support my .35 Remington wildcatting.

For my “ DEEP 6 “ wildcat, the chamber is cut by running a 6mm Remington reamer in
“ short “, for a nominal .466” base diam. I use Norma 7 X 64 Brenneke as the parent brass, as it is .308 bolt face compatible rimless; and has the .466” base diam I need.
I have not tried any other brand of 7 X 64 brass, and that includes Lapua. I have heard it said the Norma brass is comparatively “ soft “, but I myself have not found it to be.

For my “ .358 AutoMag “ wildcat, I have used both Lapua and Norma BR brass. Both have SR primer pockets. Both brands have worked fine, for me.

With regards,
357Mag

Off center flash holes...! :(
I had a batch of military .223 brass that had that problem and went through a lot of de-capping pins before I did a close look and then they all went to the "Scrap Brass Christmas Fund" bucket at the range...
