I've got a sporterized P17 Enfield that was nicely done with an older Weaver K4 scope on it. It is nicely done in a good walnut stock and blued but someone has taken an engraving pen and put the number D237xxx on the side of the action and also on the scope. I really can't believe someone did this to their own firearm for identification. Have any of you ever run across numbers like this on firearms. It's evidently been added after the remake, blueing, and adding the scope since the number's on it also. My only guess was maybe it was a police or state confiscation that was serialized in inventory at one time perhaps? Anyone have a guess or know what this is?
