What is this Sako Vixen worth?

Hotshot

Silver $$ Contributor
I have an opportunity to purchase from an estate this L461 in 222.
It is said that Grandpa carried this rifle with him everywhere he went on the farm.
Everything seems tight and sound on the action. Barrel is dirty but good rifling.
Stock has been refinished or this is a replacement. Bluing has stains but not rusty. Scope is a throw away. What do you guys think? Thanks in advance for advice.

Those old Tasco scopes are actually good scopes.
$1000-1300 is a good ballpark if the barrel scopes ok. Some old guns can look good on the outside but the barrels insides are trash. Ask me how I know.
I won’t buy an old gun without a cleaning and scoping.

I suspect that $700 - 1000 would be good for that rifle. The 222 is a desirable caliber in those small Sakos but the bluing issues and replacement stock would drop value a bit. Looks like it would make a nice shooter if the barrel is GTG.

I appreciate all the help. I'm going to make an offer but afraid it might not live up to their expectations. I would love to make a 20VT with this action.

1962 to 1973 from my old books.

More. I had a 243 win in the L579 heavy barrel & beaver tail forearm. Good shooter, but not as accurate as my Remington 40x.

If wanting the action to make a Vartarg, I'd offer no more than what the action is worth to you. I like the Sakos and have one in 6PPC I bought back in the 80's. They are good shooters. The triggers are pretty decent, but if you opt to change it, there are limited options there as opposed to a Rem 700-style action. To be worth $800.00 or so, I'd expect not only the original stock - but to not have corrosion on the receiver, as that one does. If I were offering on that rifle, I'd be shooting a $450.00 price. If it were primo - I'd go triple that.

I have a Vixen in 223 that I bought new back in 1971. It's never been the absolute best shooter, but was only the 2nd CF rifle I'd bought, and mainly because it was the only bolt rifle I could find chambered in 223 back then. Always loved how slick that action is, and would've loved to been able to buy actions only later on, as I'd like to build myself a 20 Vartarg on one, and a 6 RAT on another with the PPC boltface. Several years ago, a good friend was selling off the guns of one of his older friends who'd passed, and offered me a NIB Sako A single shot 6PPC, which I bought - and no, I'm not about to use that PPC to built a RAT on...lol Maybe one of these days I'll find another A repeater that's beat up and re-barrel it for the RAT, but for now, I'm pretty pleased with the 6 RAT I built myself on a Howa Mini action, with a Bartlein 1-8tw bbl in light Palma contour in a McMillan Game Scout stock. This is my little Vixen in 223 along with a 20 Vartarg I built for myself on a M700 SSVF in 17FB that I found on sale in a flier from Zanders. 2nd pic is of a Howa Mini bbl'd action, the Vixen, and a CZ527 carbine in 7.62x39 that I re-barreled in 6RAT. Last pic, from top down - CZ527 RAT, Sako A 6PPC, Sako Vixen 223, Howa Mini in 22 Grinch, Howa Mini in 6 RAT

Depends what the estate is if a deceased estate and the lady needs some coin its not the time for vultures give a fair price if not have at it SAKO'S are better than just about anything that came out of the US in build quality so it will make a very nice rifle no matter what you do with it .
They are highly prized here in AUS and a good ones are going for $2000 to $4000 depending on cal .
Every sako I have looked at from the 85 up are just rubbish for the money they want .

Those old Tasco scopes are actually good scopes.

I won’t buy an old gun without a cleaning and scoping.
And that's no shit, Ask me how I know too. At least a great guy on this Forum sent me a 223 Savage barrel for free. It was like new and is a tack driver. The original barrel looked liked no one ever cleaned it. Appeared to look ok with 56 year old eye's. But the bore scope showed a different story. So much copper and powder fouling, wasn't worth the effort to clean.Definitely clean and have it scoped. Lots of old timers like my Dad thought cleaning a barrel was a stupid waste of time. Knew alot guys like that. I clean every time I shoot

I’m thinking $600 without seeing the wear on the bolt or condition of the barrel bore. A well worn non-factory stock might as well not exist unless maybe it’s a Fajen.

I shot that Sako Deluxe pulled from the auction article - it was pristine. You’ll never see anywhere near that value for a well-worn Sako.
