what is the difference in Lapua brass

Re: what is the difference in Laupua brass

Neck thickness in the 6 BR cases....and even then the packaging change over did not necessarily coincide with the dimensional difference.

Re: what is the difference in Laupua brass

I have discovered that the new 6br brass in the blue box is way to soft and gauls going into a std die to prepare for neck turning.I polished the die to get rid of the streaks of brass and it did it again and again. The die in question has sized alot of brass till I got 2 boxes of the new blue box. I have alot of junk never fired brass to scrap now.The older stuff is slightly thicker and isnt annealed into jelly like these 2 boxes were.I am sure it is a fluke however one side note.Dont use a .2704 blue box reamer, use the older .272 std 6 br reamer so you truly have a no turn neck instead of finding out you have to turn to make them work in the new blue box reamer from ptg.

Jon
I have been battling the same thing with the gauling. The last batch I did, I first ran a tight bronze brush in and back out of each case. Then, I put them in a vibratory tumbler for about 3-4 hours in walnut media. It stopped the gauling....at least on that batch.

I will let you know later in the week as they are at my friends as we were turning up a whole bunch of brass.I will post my lot numbers then.Kmart can you put up your lot numbers?

Re: what is the difference in Laupua brass

I didn't know that box color was representative of different types of Lapua brass. I've bought 308 brass in blue boxes, resized to 7-08, then neck turned. Never had a problem with it. Lapua brass in general is thicker than all others. On average, I find about 2 grains less H20 case capacity (at the same trim length) over your average brass (FC/Rem/Win/etc), and about 1 grain less than Norma 7-08.

In my case, 6 br lot # P00633701 gave me no gauling after brushing and vibrating

The worst offender as far as gauling was 308 lot P00554703

I also had the same problem with the galling, had to gt the Forster die honed, never had a problem like this before in over 40 years of reloading.

From what I have read, LC brass also tends to be thicker. Do you know how 308 Lapua and LC brass compare capacity-wise?

Thx!

I just got the lot number last night. This is 6BR lapua lot# P00449704. They are way too soft in my estimation.
