What is the best long range (1000yd) 6mm cartridge

I just want some input on the most effective 6mm round for out to 1000 yards. Include all variables.
I am building a custom rifle (1st time) and am leaning towards going with the .243 AI. These are the components I have so far. Kreiger Barrel 1:7.5 twist, Mcmillian A-3 stock, Defiance Rebel action, Jewell trigger, AI DBM.
Please give me your .02 worth and thank you in advance.

John what your asking is going to open a big can of worms I love it. My self I like a Dasher .
Let the fun begin. Good Shooting Larry

Well, I didn't get any worms, but i did get a couple of prairie dogs with my straight 6BR.

6 xc , BR improveds are great till the wind blows. An extra 10 grains on the bullet an a 150 fps more makes a biiiiiig difference. I may have a weird anomaly, but my BRX barrel went to poop after 1900 rounds, I get 2500 + on my XCs. Not a fair comparison as they were different makers. The 6 comp match looks reaaaaly interesting. A comfortable 3050 with 115s ( 1/4 MOA shooter )makes reading the wind much easier ..........

My setup will be primarily used for hunting coyotes, javelina, antelope, and possibly prairie dogs if I can find them in AZ. I plan to use 105's. As for barrel length, that is a good question as I mentioned this is my first build so any advice on that would be helpful. Thanks again

I would make the barrel as long as I could for what your going to use it for. Shorter then 28'' u loose more velocity per inch. After 28''u gain less per inch. 28'' is a good number from my testing.
A dasher with a 105 and a 28'' barrel 3100 FPS is with in reason. Good Shooting Larry

I have been impressed by what John Whidden has accomplished with a 243 Win at very high velocities and have used his basic approach with some other cartridges. This old article from the Daily Bulletin is well worth reading if you want to shoot a 6mm at 1000 yards for your purposes:

6XC works for my LR 6mm...8 twist tube....37-39 grs of powder

Long barrel life...XC brass from Norma...22-250 brass from Lapua

Confirmed 1100 yd p/dog kills with mine.........not enough punch ?

Then my heavy target 6.5x55 comes out...

a 6-.284 will get more velocity with the 105s. 105 berger vlds and rel 22 (52gr) is a proven combo and velocity is 3300+, more with longer barrel. downside is of course barrel life, but if you shoot slowly...

I'm a 6MM Competition Match man. That is what I would build for what you are going to do. Fast, shoots the 115 DTAC at 3150 + an GREAT barrel life when using H-1000 powder. That 115 will lay the smack down on a Speedgoat at 500- 700 yards.

i have a 6x47 for 1000yd work on a calm day -but ,last sunday at Diggle ranges here in the uk my good mate shot his 6br in our 1000yd benchrest match and beat all comers- his last group of the match went 4.012 in ::) his agg was 6in+ for the match.

calibres he beat ranged from my 6.5x284 to 7mm mags and a fair few 284 .
his load was 105 bergers -varget in a borden action built by Peter Walker.

some shooter is the little 6br

John,

I like the 6BRX (6BR imp) The 243 AI is a good round, but it may not feed well thru a mag, as the BR and IMP's. A friend of mine has a 243 with a 7.5 tw shooting very well in long range steel matches.

I have 4 6mm long range setups. Two 6XCs, a 6SLR, and a 243AI. All 28" 8 twist barrels. All shoot either or both 105 AMax & 105 Hybrid. Awesome groundhog and prairie dog rigs. And no reason why they wouldn't work well on the other animals you mentioned.

There are a few prairie dogs in AZ. I can take you to where they are after I return to AZ for the winter around mid Oct.
