What is the basic cost range of a decent Palma Rifle

Interested in getting my budget in order for a possible Palma rifle and am trying to assess the costs involved. From the Savage version on up.
Thanks in advance

The cheapest way in is the Savage or if you luck up on a older rifle. I do not have the Savage Palma but I know guys that do and it will shoot well, very well. For the money, probably a good bet. If you look, you can get one for around $1300, I think. Then add sights...get good ones, a Warner rear and a RightSight front. Thats another $8-1000 in sights, but they never go bad or wear out.

If you step up from there, go with a good action, RPA Quadlocks are my fav, but you can save moola with another custom action, and then bbl, anything in med palma contour at 30+ inches will work. Stock....they aint cheap. McMillan, McGee, etc....I have a local guy make mine on his electric beaver.

Triggers....CG Jackson if you cant get an Anschutz to work.

Or, you can do a tube gun, or, get the real deal, a T2000 and pop a Palma tube on it...I have done that too.

Figure $2500-3000 if you build a rifle.

If you go to a Palma match, you're certain to see that many of the best shooters are using Barnard actions from site sponsor MT Guns.

And if you search the bulletin for Gary Eliseo, you'll find that he won the recent California Palma Championship with a Barnard in his tube stock.

In fact, the recent F-Open Class National Championship was won by a Barnard action.

The Model P Action comes complete with an excellent, highly adjustable trigger, $1095 plus $15 shipping.

If you email mtguns@earthlink.net I'm certain they'll be happy to put together an estimate for you, including, if you like, a Bartlein Medium Palma barrel which they keep in stock.

Best,

Steve - Don't forget you'll need a shooting coat too if you don't already have one. I have an extra Creedmoor hardback if you want to use it for a while.

Have a Creedmore canvas just NO rifle. Yet ;D
I'm sure I will have a weak (moment) $ when I see your new Palma - Dang it Jim!

I'm almost finished my new palma rifle build, and it wasnt cheap. I think its up to about $5500 Aussie. If you build one you WILL get carried away. And in my oppinion your better off spending big once and never spending again. I went with a barnard action, Kreiger heavy palma contour 32" tube, MEC stock and Centra Sights.

If your going to build one, make a list of everything you want, then add $300 for smithing work. As a rough estimate, it would be difficult to get out of it for under $3000 for something new once you add sights in.

That being said, my first rifle, bought with around 3000 rounds through the barrel, I paid $1200 Aussie for. Its a Neilsen Action (made in Australia in the 80s i think) with a MAB barrel (aussie again). I baught it with sights, a cleaning kit, and an aluminium hardcase.

Still shooting it till the other rifle is complete and it shoots great. I shot a 50.6 (of 100) on it a fortnight ago, and have scored a 50.8. Its still got the original barrel going strong after about 7000 rounds. Good barrel.

Dont underestimate how good some of the second hand equipment is. I got mine from an old bloke who was giving up the sport. He just wanted his gear to be used, rather than sitting there gathering dust.

Just remember, you also need coat, sling, glove, mat, spotting scope etc. and these add up quickly
