What is the 22 Hagar?

I have a reamer print of it and it is available to the public but that's it, can not find any other info. Is it a straight neckdown of the 6 Hagar as in the 22 Beast or 220 Thunderbolt? Is there any type of die set combination that can be used to load for it? Maker will sell the reamer and make changes a person might want, but what is it to start with? Maker won't say.
 
I imagine it's hard to research a reamer print when you don't have a database in your head that comes with experience and exposure. But you've started in the right direction - research. Plus, I've been told that no question should be considered stupid.

At any rate, it sounds like someone has taken the 6mm Hagar case and necked it to .22. And I think they are both based on the 6.8 SPC that was developed for the AR.

Dedicated Technology also makes their own versions called the 22 DTI and the 6mm DTI.
 
457ciSBC For somebody who is not trying to a dick you sure have cornered the market on it! If you are so smart why not share the info instead of just running your big fat pie hole? The print came from PTG, why don't you call them about 100 times asking for the info and have Dave Kiff blow you off every time? If you were my kid I would take care of that smart mouth of yours RIGHT NOW.

Knotwild thanks for the helpfull response, and not being a "DICK" about it.

I assumed by looking at the print I have that this is a 6mm Hagar simply necked down like the 220 Thunderbolt and 22 Beast, but since they are proprietary and no information will be released to compare, one cannot know for sure if there are differences. Two reamer makers contacted never heard of this cartridge, and the 3rd who makes and sells the actual reamer will not even return calls about it so the reamer can be purchased. I know it is not the DTI series, or multiple others etc. Given the wealth of knowledge here on the forum I assumed somebody may have experience with this cartridge and would share it. Again, thanks.

Wizzer,sorry I wasn‘t trying to offend you. My point was that if one’s strays off the beaten path sometimes you have to put in the work and do some research,everything isn’t going to fall in your lap. Why not, just post the reamer print and you would have gotten clear help or direction.I’m not familiar with the 22 Hagar and I’m no mind reader but I’m setup for the 6mm Hagar. Actually, I don’t see myself doing anything with the Hagar and easily could have necked brass down according to the print.Good luck with your project.
 
The 6mm Hagar was not based on the 6.8SPC case, though they are close. It was based of something even more obscure and the name is escaping me right now. Making 6mm Hagar from the parent case was labor intensive and the case life was not great.

.22 Hagar is most likely just a necked down 6mm Hagar. Hornady made a few runs of factory 6mm Hagar brass and there may still be some available on the market. .22 Hagar is probably formed using a 6mm Hagar bushing die and .22 bushings. The Hagar case and its derivatives did not enjoy the longevity that other cartridges have. Performance was close to 6BR and was intended to be used in the AR15 platform. 6BR is a better choice in a bolt gun.
 
Believe Hagar brass was originally made from the .30 Caliber Remington, a laborious 4 step process good for 4+/- reloads because the brass was thin in the web area.
 
Dave thanks for your input. Yes the Hagar came from 30 Remington not SPC,
and your explanation about dies sounds reasonable. The idea of using this round in a MAGAZINE FED bolt rifle because of it's length is why I ask. No problems with a BR in a single shot.
 
Walt you are correct. Hornady makes 6 Hagar brass and Creedmoor currently sells it. I do not know if the current Hagar brass is thicker in the web, maybe somebody will post about that?

Wow! Having read all the above, i FINALLY remembered looking into this chambering early last year, or before. When I saw 30 Rem and thin web, I immediately ceased my research.
There are just too many good alternate choices to dick around with that intensive labor and end up w 4 firings +/-.
OP, thanks for bringing this up as a refresher of "Wildcats to Avoid". I may be retired but not desperate for something to do.
 
TAJ45 that's funny!^^^^^^ I am also retired. Actually BOLT RIFLE owners of the 22 type Hagars that I have spoken too have reported no brass life problems. Gas gun owners may experience a difference? I have no info there, maybe somebody will respond?

Edit: Hornady Hagar brass takes small rifle primers so that should help with primer pockets holding tension. Since 6 Hagar is not a saami cartridge no case thickness dimensions are available there. I believe the web/wall thickness is greater than the old 30Rem. But possibly only a sectioned case will tell for sure and I do not have any.

The 6mm HAGAR case is heavier.
Necking down to 22 cal doesn't lose case volume if the bullet occupies the entire neck.
You lose some volume bumping the HAGAR case to 22N length.

The Hagar case necked to .224 can't be much different between wildcats.
Don't know all the specifics but one must be better than the others :)
Where a reamer might be different is the lead.
Using the full case length instead of the case bumped to 22N dimensions gives more volume for powder.
With the 22N you also lose volume due to all the extra brass in the Hagar case.
For 'Most' powders that's about a grain or so.
