What is 223 Remington Match?

My understanding of the Match chamber is that the neck/throat is different, kind of in between standard and 5.56.
Pac-nor and others all will chamber a barrel for the match chamber.

Different companies use different reamers specs . I've got PTG reamer print book and it's like previously said tighter neck and some other body dimensions and the leade angle and freebore

In some terminology, "match" is used to indicate a chamber
with SAAMI mimimum dimensions.

Different users have different terminology.

For example, someone called the company president an idiot.
This caused a great rift in the company----about half wondered
who called the president an idiot and the other half wondered
who called the idiot a president.

Are we confused ?

I bought a Krieger ".223 Match" barrel for an A/R from them a long time ago. It was for military matches. I was told by the folks at Krieger that the barrel was NOT for heavy .556 load use. I also ordered a Shilen ".223 Match" barrel and was told by them that it was "odd" that I wanted it in a 1-9" twist. Seems the chamber is designed for heavier bullets and probably more sold in 1-7" twist configurations. Seemed odd to me that the chambering was designed around heavier bullets - but not suitable for heavy .556 loads. I'd ask a lot of questions about the chamber before you buy - to be sure it serves the purpose of what you need it for. Be sure the twist, ability to accommodate .556 (or not) and throating are suitable for your intended bullet. Seems there is not a standardized "match" chamber. To some barrels - it could just be a minimum dimension .223 Remington chamber. To some - it is that with a longer throat.

Another possibility for you is to load up a couple of dummy cartridges with your chosen bullet seated so the heel (aft end of bearing surface) is at or just above the neck/shoulder junction and send those to a barrel maker such as Shilen, and have them chamber the barrel to those cartridges.

I took a stock aftermarket barrel to a 'smith and had him throat the barrel to fit the bullet I wanted to shoot. Same idea, but if you're going to order a barrel, do it all in one step instead of two.

Freebore, from above reamer drawings? Looks like?
.0680" vs .150"
Match vs 90 gr.

Now much bullet shank is below the neck shoulder junction with a 90 gr ? Just asking.

I ordered a 223 match chamber 1/7 Criterion barrel from Northwoods shooter supply 2 days ago for my 700 remington they said the freebore was .090 and was what I wanted for 75 to 80 gr Bergers which I want to shoot.

"Match" usually means a chamber size cut to minimum SAAMI specs.

If someone wants to stay with in the usual parameters of the 223/556 and mag load then get a Wylde reamer and pretty much everything works. I'd wager that a large majority of the guys shooting Service Rifle are shooting that chamber.

If you want to shoot 80s and 90s from a bolt gun, single feed, then get the PT&G ISSF 223 Match reamer with a .169 freebore, or something like it. The .169 works great for 80s and 90s. If you want to shoot exclusively 90s you may be better off with a .185 or a .190 freebore and a 1:7 twist will work just fine to 600 yards.

If you want to shoot the 95 SMKs you really need something with a 220+ freebore and a 6.5 twist.

The freebore gets the long bullets up out of the case where you need room for powder.

Here's another wrinkle - Back in 2010 I had my old Rem 700, 222 rebarreled with a Douglas Match barrel in 223 Rem. The rifle smith stamped the cartridge identity on the barrel as "223 Match". The barrel is simply a SAMMI chambered 223 Rem with a 12" twist. When I asked why he didn't just stamp it "223 Rem" to reflect the accurate description of the caliber of the barrel he replied, "because it has a match barrel and chamber."

While I never intend to sale this rifle I wasn't pleased with his explanation since it creates confusion if I ever needed to sale the rifle. The good news is that this rifle has produced 5 shot groups in the .1 to .2 range off the bench - even for me and I'm not a good bench shooter - just don't have the patience - I prefer to shoot (range time) off my shooting sticks to simulate real world field shooting in a hunting situation.

Seems to be some confusion on match and SAAMI spec.

Match does not means SAAMI min spec for the most part.

A SAAMI min spec. Chamber is exactly that. The allowed minimum spec the chamber can be for making ammo and for production of rifles etc... Has nothing to do with match. For factory guns there is min spec and production chambers that either or can be used.

The only match chamber I know of used by Saami is for .22rf match and that thing is so short on the throat that to my knowledge it is only used in specific test barrels and we get little call for it. Also there is a 7.62 NATO Match spec but I don’t like the design and I don’t know of anyone really using it. Even the 7.62 match reamer isn’t a Saami spec. It’s the name of that specific chamber it was given to my knowledge.

That being said whenever someone ask me for a match chamber...my question back is what is a match chamber to you?

It can mean a different throat spec.
It can mean a different neck diameter and throat spec.
To some guys they are changing the body specs.

So if you ask a barrel maker and they say they have a match reamer...ask them for a reamer drawing copy or to explain to you what is different about it vs. a standard spec chamber etc...

Some gun manufacturers even change the Saami spec. (Never seen any go under the min. Spec.) and the chamber they put in they’re guns are to they’re spec and they won’t necessarily give out a copy of the drawing. It is proprietary to them.
