What insert to machine nitride hardened bolt?

Greetings,

I need to open up a bolt face that has nitride hardening. I have not attempted to machine something this hard before. Is something like a cbn insert required or could the micro 100 BB do the job? Note a new bolt is out of the question. (Barnard P).
Cheers, Jake.

Not sure what kind of Rockwell you end up with doing Nitride hardening.

Most stuff in our shop up through about 60 Rockwell we use carbide inserts.

Chromed and harder than 60 Rockwell we typically use ceramic inserts.

The nitriding that everybody does on actions is really not difficult for any carbide tool to handle.
As was said, once you break through the surface coating, it will machine rather easily.

What will be a little aggravating is if there is a slot for a Sako style extractor, or one in the locking lug. Being an interrupted cut, it might give you a little problem, just run it fast and hand feed it.
