What heavy 6mm bullet for coyotes?

I am building a 6x47 for coyotes and am wondering from guys with experience, what bullet will expand best on light game? I was planning on the 105 hunting vld, but ran across a post by Eric Stecker that the 105 bt is more explosive. But what about the 105 amax or 107 sierra? I have a 6br I shoot 60 grain hps out of but this is to beat our steady 20 mph winds.

One guy I shoot with uses 107 smks for antelope an says they work perfect. He kills them out to 6-700 yds but hasn't taken any shots farther than that.

Good advice above. I wouldn't consider the 107SMK remotely comparable to the Berger or A-Max. I pencil holed numerous chucks from 300-650 yards with a 6AI before switching to A-Max bullets. With more tissue to pass through, the SMK might be acceptable, but I wouldn't waste my time. Go straight to something more frangible.

I am using the 95 grain VLD berger HUNTING BULLETS and they shoot very good i shot one coyote with them and it about cut the coyote in half so if you want to save fur no good but they shoot very good.

Ok it sounds like the amax and hunting vlds should work. I just want to be humane, no matter what the game. Have you guys ever trimmed the metplat on the vld? It seems like it would open up the tip and help expansion.

I run the 105 VLD Hunting and keep my fir and those work very well for me out of a 243,
as a side note Retumbo was the best powder that I tried with them too.

Just one alternative you may want to consider in the current limited bullet environment. I have shot prairie dogs at over 1000 yards using a 6-284 loaded with the Lapua Scenar 105gn bullet. I was surprised to find some limited signs of bullet expansion on the kills - I thought that was impressive given the low terminal velocity at that distance, the comparatively heavy construction of the bullet (compared to a varmint bullet) and the small size of the target. I haven't tried, but I expect they would work well on long range coyote shooting.

Without knowing your killing distance, I use Berger 115 VLD Hunting for deer and Berger 88 FB for foxes (we don't have coyotes in the UK). Originally, I used the 115's (3030mv) for fox, but switched to the 88g FB (3375mv) and have never looked back. Head count currently 80 since late April and certainly no walking wounded since switching to the 88's.

Ive been shooting/calling coyotes since the 70s and have yet to see a need for a bullet over 65g for them in any 6mm.
In my 6mms I run the 55g-65g bullets, but that's just me and my coyote experiences.
I have shot a few at 500-600 yards with my 65g load when they are out mousing and just standing there, but that's not going to happen very often for anyone.

Where I live 20 mph wind is a normal day, when its under 15mph I run to the range for load development :D. The 60s I shoot in my br are no good after 300, even at 300 your holding quite a bit.

zfastmalibu,

The best varmint bullet for a 6mm is the 87gr Vmax. it will expand at about any range. killing power is unreal. it is a 400 bc, great for long range.

I use a 105grn Berger Hunting VLD from November through the end of Feb on coyotes for fur. They'll leave a quarter sized exit hole on broad side shots.

From March through October (out side of fur season), I'll use 105grn Amax, they will leave a larger hole on broad side shots. I'm after dead, so wound size doesn't matter as much.

If you're just in it to kill them and not worrying about hole size, the 105 amax is the one to use.

Currently the Hunting VLD is much easier to find then the amax.

I cant help you just getting into 6mm . I have been hunting coyotes for years with 204 ruger and 40 to 50 grain hornady and bergers. I cant for the life of me figure why a heavy bullet for coyotes when I call them to within 10 yards of me. Incidently , I dropped one on a run at 296 yards with a 50 grain berger! Unless , you want to take extreme shots at dogs 600 or more out why heavy Bullets? Just my opinion?
