What happened to the concern with barrel burners and over-bore cartridges?

Usually Kinda silly to worry about barrel cost when ammunition to kill it is considerably more expensive
Dead and new replacement 338 barrels both cost less than half the ammunition to burn one out.

That said I’m not interested in having a barrel dying in 600 or so rounds like 7Rum and 338/375 cheytac improved.
My 338 and 7mm are dead at about 1400-1500 rounds.820E5AF1-B80B-4710-B5F9-9D9C6BD2A047.jpeg

Burning out barrels is quite real. I have burned out two .257 Weatherby barrels- 750 to
800 rounds each and 4 to 5 inches of throat erosion on each, on the contrary to the
opinion that most shooters don't burn out barrels.

I just had a 22x47, 22-6.5 PRC and 25 Saum Improved built last year. Barrels don’t last any longer now days and even with care not to overheat the barrel I don’t expect to get more than 700 rounds or so out of 22-6.5 PRC but it is fun! Barrels are expendable, I have plenty of standard cartridges to play with but overbore cartridges put a smile on my face. The two coyotes I shot over the winter with the 6.5 PRC were impressive kills. I understand it’s not for everyone.

I blame Fredo and his 220 redline thread. That thread probably explains the attraction of overbore cartridges as well as anything I’ve read on here, it’s worth the read. 220 redline is a 22-Saum. Link to the thread below if interested.

What speed are you getting with the 22-6.5?

Visualize a second grader waving his hand in class and saying "Teacher; I know, I know...".
For me, live varmint is the competition of choice. Prime country is about 300 miles, round trip. Components and the fuel cost is about what the new fluted Lilja barrel I have coming next week will run me. If I get 1000 sub-1/2 moa rounds a trip I will get about 20 trips before I wear that barrel, or any other, out.

As a slight tangent, I was afraid my Neurosurgeon was going to tell me yesterday that surgery was not an option to repair my L3 Lower Spinal Cord. Instead, she says she can fix me 99% as good as new. Shooting costs pale by comparison. Thank the Lord you can afford to go shooting.

I’m just getting the barrel broke in, with 70 grain accubonds and Barnes I’m getting 3620-3680. I’ll push on it this summer but I don’t typically shoot my rifle on the highest node even with over bore cartridges. I’m typically using a lower node for most of my rifles if the accuracy, SD and ES are there.

What kind of steam are you getting with the 22-6.5 PRC?

I think older shooters on down to shooters in my age group "mid 40s" still concern themselves with barrel life and component cost and things like that. Younger shooters only care about what they hear about on podcasts by instafamous influencers who have more money than sense. They never talk about burning out a barrel because they don't care as long as Hornady says its amazing.

Probably the only rifle that hasn't had its barrel replaced, at the magic 1,000 rounds juncture, is my .308Win. Replacing barrels is rather expensive IMO. The last barrel I replaced cost:

Bartlein Carbon $850
Gunsmith charge $450
Shipping each way $100
Total $1,500

Yeah, you can get away cheaper but you're looking at about a grand unless you can chamber, thread & install yourself.

I was thinking of top fuel dragster that get overhauled after a pass or 2.
As a friend told me once....
You can buy the car, but can you afford the maintenance?
To keep with the car theme as I was reading all the comments the saying from my race car days came to mind:
SPEED COST MONEY…. HOW FAST DO YOU WANT TO GO…?”

I'd suggest part of it is the apparent increasing interest in shooting at distances not regularly shot to before. It takes a lot of energy to get that far and it's gonna be hard on a barrel.
Love your avatar… Especially appropriate for this thread… {:~)

The question that has been asked for decades is: Have the animals u hunt/shoot become harder to kill? Will a groundhog shot with a 222 laugh n walk away? Is a 270 Win no longer capable of killing an elk?
The marketing departments need continual “ New n Improved” to sell products. New large over bore cartridges use up components at a faster rate. That means they sell / you purchase more product.
Younger shooters may not have the mentors/ experience to realize that they are the targets of marketing. How is a 6 mm Creedmore different/better than the older/ proven 6XC? It isn’t but the newer designation has been hyped in publications.
The names change but the game is the same.

So many have gone to the smaller rounds due to $$ that the topic doesn't rage like it used to? Just a thought

Depends upon what you are trying to achieve.

Paper is not living material to begin with. Placing shots close together at extreme distances still requires the energy to get there with as close as possible to the same path several times in succession.

Being efficient is more important to myself…
Like spinning a 32gr bullet @ 4012fps with 19.2 gr powder… or 3846fps with 18.22gr of powder

It seems like not too many years ago there was real concern with picking cartridges that weren't going to shoot out barrels too quickly. But now we have the 6.5 PRC and 22 Creedmoor and no one seems to be complaining about barrel life. Are barrel materials better now, or was the original threat of shooting out barrels just overblown?
I will tell you up front, I have not read all of the posts in this thread. But I think the reason is that there are VERY good alternatives available today, to the "barrel burners". I shot a 243 WIN for awhile, quite successfully. But only got <1,500 out of it. The 6bra barrel I just replaced had somewhere around 5K before it went away.

What speed are you getting with that 22-6.5prc? And what bullet?
