What do you guys think about a 6x47Lapua.

We have a new build project in the works now a 6mmx47Lapua On a long action Remington model 700 stainless steel long action. The components that we are going be using is a Lilja 3 - groove 8 twist we are going to be shooting the Sierra 95gr bullets in this one that we are getting ready to put in the works right now. Our reamer is a PTG with a .269 neck with .105 free bore. The brass we are going to be using is the 6.5x47Lapua blue box. We were thinking about Reloader - 15 what do you guys think ?

I am not sure about that caliber but its great in the 243. Have you looked up the load data on it. It sounds like a real nice build.Good luck with it!!!

Try a slower powder like RL19, H4350, heck even H4831SC if you dont mind running slower. RL15 will be good for lighter bullets like the 60-80gr stuff but should get better barrel and case life from slower powders.

I don't really see the need for this cal. when you are building a Dasher ? They are took close in speed and 6x47 is not as accurate as the Dasher. i would go for the parent body and build a 6.5x47……… jim

I'll second staying with a Dasher. I had a 6X47L a few years ago and it burns 6-8 grains more powder than a Dasher for a velocity gain of only 100 fps. I got rid of it and have 3 Dashers now. I also found the 6X47L to be a bit finicky as far as load tuning. The Dasher will be more accurate at all ranges and is usually at the top of the winner lists all across the US.

i just had to have one so i ordered a pt&g reamer to my specs. 12 tw kreiger to shoot 80 gr fowlers. took some time but finally got a good load using rel 17. one day it shoots and another it doesn't. my 6 brs never disappoint me. thinking about setting it back to a dasher and stay with the 80 grainers. oh yea, it can burn the bore early.

I think your problem is the RL17, not the 6x47 Lapua.

H4350 is a good choice. I have seen guys set records in F-Class with 6x47's, they hammer when properly tuned.

Barrel life is also good on the 6x47 is you use slow single base powders. Double base powders will eat barrels faster.

My 6X47L with 10 twist pac nor barrel shoots very well with several different powders in the medium-slow burning range. N550 is outstanding for both accuracy and velocity with bullet weights from 70-95 Gr. Viic

Erik, My point is how fast can it go with a 6x47 and hold a .1 ? and burn more powder? I can run a Dasher a lot faster but you can not hold a .1………. jim

Jim, I get exactly what you are saying, I was just letting preddick know that I believe his issue is more powder than cartridge. My daughter shoots a 6x47 for hunting and RL17 yielded inconsistent results, once I switched to N550, groups came right in and all is good now.

Erik, My point is, The Dasher can hold a .1 or less size group @ 3000 FPS but can go considerably fast but accuracy will fall off to almost .2…… Did you or can you equal this with a larger case and more powder …….. i think you can't…. so it is better served as it was intended a 6.5x47 that can use the case efficiently as does the Dasher at it size……. jim

The gun I talked about is a hunting gun, so it was not tested as a bench gun.

Larger cases can be very accurate as well, the .300 WSM is a good example. I have not played with 6mm's much. The only one I have played with for an F-Class gun was a 6mm Dasher, but when I put it against my 6.5x47 Lapua, the "47" shot much better at 300-1000 yards with less drift. This was about 4 years ago and it might have been a bad barrel on the Dasher and an excellent barrel on the "47", but after that, I just stuck with the "47"

That "47" I'm talking about would shoot 5/8" groups at 400 yards consistently, it was a hammer!

Erik, we were talking 6mm to 6mm. Dasher verses 6x47…….. i did say the 6.5x47 was a better choice because they are building a Dasher also……..jim

I know, I was just giving some background on my experience with the Dasher. I also agree that the better of the two is the 6.5x47, but I also have no experience with the 6x47 Lapua as a competition round, only as a hunting round. However, I know some guys that have some that really hum.

CG,

I have a 6x47 Lapua Improved (Long Dasher). Built on a trued Rem 700 SA. 28 inch Krieger 1:9. .266 neck. I shoot 39 grs of R15 - 87 gr v maxs at 3400 fps and it will consistently group in the .2s and sometimes a little better. It is absolutely hard on Ground Hogs! During FF I shoot 33 gr Varget 95 gr VLDs and have several .1s groups. Very happy with my set up and would recommend it to anyone.

+1 Erik.
Actually I would be willing to debate the proposition of greater accuracy in a Dasher. Bug holes are bug holes. Way back, I built my first 6X47 because I kept watching a couple of them win. I also disagree that they are finicky. All rifles are finicky if you use the wrong stuff (Twist, bullet, etc) . If you want a 6X47 Lapua, try h4350, 8 twist and a 105 VLD - then go trash a dasher. LOL. I have been wondering why people don't favor them over Dashers. Then I ordered some 6.5X47 brass to resize and I remembered. Brass IS sorta pricey.

Mr Cortina, what are you currently using for F-Class? And what loads are you using and how does it shoot?

Thank you sir.

I'm currently shooting a .284 Shehane with N165 and 180 gr. Lapua Scenar L's.

My new barrel for my 6.5x47 Lapua should be shipped Thursday, I will load 136 gr. Lapua Scenar L's and N150
