i have a couple of protektor rear bags that i have sand in them and i just got a new deluxe bag to use for a shoot coming up -- i want to fill it up but would like to know what you use to fill with and how does it work - i have sand and i have some shot 7-1/2 and i have rice but wondered what would work best ?? - the weight doesnt bother me - i just want a solid bag

I just go to PetSmart and get heavy sand that's intended for lizard habitats; it's inexpensive and works very well - the bag is more stable than with regular sand. If you're going to be competing in a formal benchrest match, lead shot isn't allowed. Rice is so light that the bag probably wouldn't be stable.

ronemus is on the right page. The best sand I have found is the Repti-sand It's heavy and it's very EASY to fill your bags.

I tried the reptile sand as well...the heaviest stuff was about 85% the weight of the same volume of Zircon...

Just an FYI - Zircon is my pref, but keep the reptile sand as a backup...

Also, pricewise, it is tough to get reptile sand for cheap enough to make it a better deal than zircon from Sinclair or Hart.

FWIW: many types of sand will also absorb moisture. Last season, I redid a pals rear bag that had pet sand in it. It had hardened into an almost plaster-like consistency and I had to darn near destroy the bag to get it out. -Al

I like Zircon sand which is sold by my local reloading store, Gunstop Enterprises,http://gunstop.com). Its very small grain, high density and ability to really pack it in makes for very stable and consistent leather bags. In 3 years of use, I've added to my rear bag once, after a year and a half of use, and have not had to change it since. I never did have to add to the front bag. The "secret" is to pack the sand in with a miniature jack hammer, or equivalent. Zircon packs very well.

Russ Haydon sells a black sand. This is heavy and he sells it in 15# size for $15. Lead shot is not appropriate and not sand.
