What do you consider a barrels worth of components?

Mainly curious what guys buy in advance with new rifle. For instance I had a 280ai built for a hunter and a 6 bra as a target only rifle. How much brass/bullets/powder do you dedicate to a particular rifle? Or what do you plan on the life span of a barrel?

I normally buy around 300-500 pieces of quality brass for my target rigs and try to keep them all consistent so all get loaded and 1x fired before starting on 2x firing. On hunting rigs I think 100 pieces of quality brass would last you a life time. For bullets I normally purchase in small amounts initially and test a few I want to use. Once I've confirmed that recipe works I'll stock up on at least 2k bullets for target rigs and around 500 for hunting. Primers and powder can never be too "stocked" on my shelves.

I must be in a lower tax bracket - if I bought 2k in components for every rifle I’d need a much larger garage.

For an elk rifle, it gets sighted in and one box of ammo goes along on the hunting trip, so 100 bullets would last at least a few years. Same for the backup elk rifle. The second and third backup rifles don’t need much.

A deer/antelope rifle gets shot more with multiple zero checks, but 50 rounds a year would be all it really needs. Same for the backup rifle. The second, third and fourth backup rifle not so much.

A small varmint rig is different and it really needs at least a few hundred cases and 1000 bullets. Same for a plinking/training rifle. Same for any kind of competition rifle. A coyote rifle needs a lot less.

I have a 458 win mag, but I’ll never burn out the barrel - same for a 375 - one box of ammo is enough for the longest range session. Same for the guns that rarely get shot. It doesn’t make sense to load up 100 rounds for a rifle that may not get shot at all this year.

It all depends on how much you shoot, what you like to shoot, and if you like to reload fewer cases more often, or more cases less often.

As for how long a barrel will last, the 22-250, 243, 270, 6.5 prc, 300 prc, 7 mag type of guns will be lucky to make it much over 1500 rounds. 6 br, 6.5 creed, 7mm08, 30-06 maybe twice that. 223, 30 br, 308 maybe 5k.

I don’t hunt anymore but for my target rifles, what I consider “peak” accuracy lasts about 1,000 rounds. This has held true for 6 Dasher, 300 WSM, 6.5x47L and 6 BRA barrels.

Unfortunately I have actually begun to revise this number downward and what I consider to be “extreme” accuracy may only last 400-500 rounds. This would be the accuracy required to have a chance to win the largest, well attended LR Benchrest matches.

I have recently had both a PPC and 22LR put together. I’m not sure what to expect on them.

It all depends on the results you are looking for.

Dave.

Depends on powder type, charge weight, and what caliber/cartridge, but for 284 win and 6 dasher I know you can be very accurate at well over 2000 rounds.

A brick of primers and a jug of powder.
5,000 rounds if I choose my cartridge well.

I load .308winchester, .223 Remington, 300blk, .45acp, and .38spl. All have long barrel service lives compared to some other cartridges.

The .223 barrel in my competition service rifle will almost certainly be the first to wear out.
