What do yall think about this load? 308...

I happened to stumble upon a box of lapua 308 win brass at the shop today so I snatched it up. Just got done prepping it... I have a this barrel coming in next week... 20 inch barrel, 1:10 twist.

Lapua Brass
federal match primer
155 gr berger target/hunting vld

What do yall think about running the 155's with the 1:10 twist? I'm going to give it a shot (or 100 shots) anyways since I got em...

Someone said, "we need better questions". That is not to be taken as a negative response but more detail would be helpful. I have a lot of experience with the 308 and that may or not be helpful depending on your specific application. 'Help me help you", to quote Tim.

Im getting a 308 barrel made for a switch barrel... my barrel is a 1:10 heavy varmint. Ive been pretty set on a 20 inch barrel, for manuverability, and a suppressor one day maybe...

hunting/target/long range sniper style shooting on steel is what i do. I have other rifles more capable than a 308, but why not have a 308 too?! Haha...

like was mentioned i got the reloading components, and grabbed a box of the berger 155s... i read a lot on the 155 bergers and how many like em so i thought id give em a try... they are higher bc than many others.

i thought for a long time now id start out with the classic 168 sierra, but the more infor i read the more i liked the sound of these bergers. Just might not have the right twist for em... i figured with a 1:10 im more set up for the 168 to 175gr area... i dont like the idea of a 175gr tho because i dont want a "slow round"...

i figured id start out with varget... see what it can do...

The 1in10 will stabilize a 155's fine. I have a 1 in 10 and a 1in12 and I have had very good results with 155s and IMR4064.

Also you should be able to run 190's and possibly heavier. I am a Palma shooter so most of what I shoot are 155's.

Your short barrel is really going to limit your velocity. Without the barrel length your not going to get the velocities needed for long range(1000yds) with 155's. To have any luck at that distance I would think you have to run a heavier bullet.

You will be fine with the 155 VLD in your 10 twist. You will have to play with your seating depth to get best accuracy. Sometimes these bullets like to be jammed but they will shoot jumping and most often they like jumping a loooooooooog ways to the lands. If you go to the web site www.longrangeshooting.com in the reloading section there is a detailed sticky about finding the proper seating depth for the VLD. By the way 43 to 44 grs IMR 4895 behind that 155 has been really accurate in my 308 Wins and 42 grs IMR 4895 is really accurate in my 30x47 and both have 10 twist barrels. Oh! These bullets leave HUGE exit holes in deer. I am talking about being able to drop a baseball into the hole without it touching anything. ;D

In my experiences, I see potential accuracy issues with a 20" barrel for "long range shooting". 168's are great for up to 300 yds, but you'll need the 175's for anything longer. And Varget, RL15 or IMR4895 will work, but you gotta test to see which one your rifle likes the best.

Palma shooters use 155 grain bullets to 1k without any problem staying supersonic, but they use longer barrels. Having said that, wind changes everything. Litz in his Applied Ballistic book makes a clear case that greater mass trumps speed at long range every time.

Kindest regards,

Joe

By the way, I found that Federal 210M primers fit very loose in the Lapua primer pockets. I had to switch to CCI BR-2 primers because I had more than a few just fall out in the bottom of the ammo box. That hasn't happened since I switched.

I believe he was referring to the 168 SMK not being a good 1000 yard bullet. Low BC and design make it hard to get a load to stay super sonic at 1000 from a 308. The better ballistics of the 155 and the speed allow it to fare better at 1000

So what im gathering here is with the shorter barrel, 155gr bullets and up i should be able to run fine... use the 155s for deer hunting and shorter range work, and play in the 175gr area for a longer range round.

Im not too too worried about having the shorter 20 inch barrel, maybe a 22? Because i have a 260 tac, 6xc, and 338 lapua that will do 1000 yards and further. Im covered for the most part.. the 308 im looking more for manuverability for a deer blind... as the longer barrels are a pain in the "a" to move around...

Just an opinion but are you locked into the HV taper? If you are looking for maneuverability for hunting and blind work. I would personally look into a lighter taper. Even a Palma cut down would be lighter. Just my opinion.

Yep, HV for sure. Its what my stock is inletted for... this is a switch barrel rifle... weight dont bother me, just length..
