What do I have here? Need advice on case forming too.

Picked up a rifle chambered in what appears to be 22br but .100 short case length. ???
Only came with 60 pieces of brass, & I have no experience at case forming.
Maybe it won't shoot & all this will be moot, but any clues & advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Marcus,

You've got brass. That's a good thing. Bring it to a gunsmith and have him measure it. It might also be a good thing to have him cast the chamber to make sure of the actual internal dimensions of your rifle.
After having done this, you will have a lot of information on what you have to do to either fireform or use dies to achieve useable brass.

Keep us informed. It is always nice to have a follow up on threads such as yours.

Cheers,

I do have a shortened Redding FL sizing die as well as a "Wilson Type" seater & decapping setup.
That can get me started shooting this thing.
Will have to guestimate on powder charge however, starting LOW!!!

What's the headstamp on your cases? One of my .22BR's is from the 80's, the original version and uses Rem. 7BR brass, necked and shortened. The other one is the later version with longer neck and uses Lapua brass. But if shorter length includes the shoulder, there's a .100" short version of the 22BR called a .22BRAT.

Yes, that includes the shoulder. I think you're on to something here.
The cases started life as 6mmBR Lapua.

Shot it today. Groups well with 25.1 gr of H322 behind a Sierra 53gr hp. took it up to 25.9 but didn't get any better. No pressure signs.
Waiting for my neck turning tools so I can make some more brass & do more testing.
Keep ya posted................

Mark: Standard accuracy load with H322 powder, in my 22BR, Shilen barrel, .251" neck, is 28.5 grs. Not at max, but close. So, with your shorter case, and depending on bullet seating depth with the Sierra #1400 (the most accurate in my 22BR), 28.5 may be the "red line"/ stay well below load for your shorter case. At 29 grs. I suddenly had hard bolt lift and really ugly primers, although no ruptures, that probably would have followed. The pressure signs came on real quick, with no slow buildup of warning signs.

I plan on staying close to 25gr right now. I was shooting a ladder but due to my limited supply of brass, was moving up at .3gr between loads. Figure I'll try a few between 24.8 and 25.2. See what happens. Thanks for the warning though.
That's got that 6-18 on it that I got frm you, just by the by!

Shot it again yesterday & 25 gr of 322 seems to be a good load. Grouping very well (3/8") at 100 meters with 52gr Sierras.
Tried out my formed cases too. Can't say they grouped really well, but they were just fire formed in the garage with Bullseye just prior to this, so I expect improvement next time.
Never knew burnt Cream of Wheat smelled so bad!

That cartridge was meant for benchrest. It should be extremely accurate. My 22BR is unGodly accurate and very fast with RL15 shooting most any 50gr bullet. Also VV133 and AA2230 work well.

Have lots of 2230. Don't use it in anything right now either. Might have to geve it a try.
Thanks for the info.

Tried the 52gr Berger FBs. Definitely prefers the Sierras. Maeybe I should have got the BTs1 Oh well, it's ALL a learning experience!
Next week with 2230!
