What Dies For A .284?

Getting geared up for the project. All I currently use are Redding Type "S" Match dies. I don't know a thing about Forster or any other top end dies.

What dies are you guys liking for loading your .284's?

Is anyone sending in fireformed brass to Forster or Wilson for Custom Dies?

I'm not afraid to try something new, just need a direction to go. Thanks ahead of time.

Call Mark Spencer and send him some fired cases. He will grind a custom sizing die with a bushing that comprises the neck and shoulder. It is an excellent die and fits my 6BR and 6mm Rem perfectly. I bought a Warner die for my .284 Shehane and it is also excellent, albeit at significantly higher cost. [br]

Froggy is right about Neil Jones. I forgot that he also uses a neck/shoulder bushing. Any of those three will provide an optimum chamber fit, size the neck all the way to the shoulder and provide a means to adjust headspace. You would not go wrong with any of them. [br]

If you are also ordering your own reamer from PT&G, you can tell them the part number of the resizing die you want to use and they will make the reamer to work with whatever amout of resize you want fromn the die. I went that way with one of my 7mms and the results have been as good as with my custom dies for other cartridges. The Forster Micrometer Ultra seaters work as well as anything or you can have your chamber reamer run into a Wilson blank. I've done both succesfully.

My gunsmith, MSTrophyHunter on this forum, talked me back into a .284 Shehane. He recommended the Wilson dies and he will "chamber" them when he chambers my Krieger barrel.

That's the part I don't understand. If they use your reamer, your case is sized to your chamber dimensions...also your fired case. How do you get your sizing/one to two thou. bump?

There are two reamers, one for the chamber and one for the sizing die. The sizing reamer is smaller by the required amount. The chambering reamer, as Tony noted, works very well for a seating die. I used my chambering reamer for .284 Shehane with a Wilson seater and it works really well.

They will grind your chamber reamer so that it is bigger than the resizing die in the right places. They make the reamers used by the die manufacturers to make the resizing dies so they know how much bigger to make the chambering reamer depending on how much resizing you want. I ask for a minimum resize for a single shot bolt gun but they can give more room in the chamber for a gas gun or hunting rifle. The die is the size it is. They just abjust the size of the chamber to work with the die and the intended purpose.

I have a .284 Shehane and bought the Wilson neck sizing and seating dies with the Redding full length sizing die with neck bushings.
They all work well.

Correct. I was able to just give them the die maker and part number and I got a chamb er reamer that worked perfectlyt with my chosen dies.
