What color should the bore be on a ss barrel after repeated fire and cleaning

jonbearman

I live in new york state, how unfortunate !
I looked into the muzzle of my benchgun and was wondering if it is normal for the grooves look gray black.I have cleaned this barrel with everything under the sun and it still looks dark but patches are clean.Does the burning powder kind of discolor the barrel or am I doing something wrong.

Hi Jon,,,run a clean patch thru the bore and to aprox. 1/2" from the muzzel,,,then shine a flashlight down the bore and look for color,,,it will amaze U how much you will see and exactaly how clean it is,,,Roger

Right on the money. If you look in a SS barrel with a bore scope it will appear gray. I usually put a Q-tip in the barrel and push it ahead of the bore scope and the bore magically turns to shiny stainless steel.

Roger you kill me. I am schooled once again by the masters. It looks like fresh stainless steel.

Yup.

Same thing happened to me until I put a white pipe cleaner in the barrel. Big difference.

I stuck a patch in the barrel like expiper and others said and then looked at it and it looked perfect.

I thought my barrels were clean because I was getting clean patches out of the muzzle. I then bought a borescope. I now clean the barrel as before then view the bore after this cleaning and the presence of clean patches and there continues to be black/gray residue.

I then bought Iosso bore paste and I use that after my usual cleaning regimen. The gray/black residue is then gone and my patches come out black.

After a trial of multiple cleaning chemicals, I have not found anything outside of Iosso paste that gets out the gray/black residue as seen by my borescope.

Your results may vary.
