What chamberings fit an AR-15 with a standard bolt?

Not sure if anything other than the .223 case can be used with the standard bolt. There are so many options out there but I'm not sure which ones use that bolt. Thanks for any info

I have not personally heard of a .17 chambering for an AR but I'm sure someone has done it. Otherwise pick any caliber between .224 & .308 and someone has surely modified the .223 case for it. Maybe even bigger. Current hot seller is 300 AAC Blackout.

Not standard bolt but hell of a coyote gun.

204 Ruger is discontinued but they make 30 Remington and 450 Bushmaster in AR platform !! I have it is .243...it's a hog machine.

The reason for the question is that I got a super deal on an ar-15 stripped upper and the bolt carrier (no bolt) that came off a .223 ar. wanted to know what I could build off it. I also have a buddy that has a 6.8 bolt, would that fit in the.223 carrier?

Yes that bolt will work in an ar15 carrier. Any wildcat based off the 223 and 221 fireball case can be had in an ar15.
6x45 is a cool round

What would you like to do that a .223 won't do?

There's a 6.5 Patriot out there, if you want a bigger bullet.
There's the .20 Practical if you want smaller.

well i dont want to give away an idea but I dont think I have the money to make it happen so..... I want to load a .338 bullet for an ar-15 to be purely subsonic, close quarters. I had initially thought the .223 case might work but it is just big enough to fit the bullet with no shoulder, so now im thinking 6.8 or 7.62x39 to work with what I have or can easily get. The slightly bigger cases would give me a neck and also a little more case capacity which there wont be much of anyway after its cut down enough to be loaded to the .223 mag length. A 300gr .338 bullet going at 1100fps is nothing to snicker at and surely beats the pants off the .300 blackout

The .338 Whisper has already been done. Uses a .221 Fireball case which has the same head dia as a .223 and it gets 1050fps with a 300 gr bullet..

The 7.62x39 & 6.8 SPC both have bigger case heads.

I would sell or trade the 6.8 bolt for 223 bolt. 338 whisper would be your ticket then. Ar standard mags will work with it.

.221 are hard to find cases, though there would be dies and reamers already made. I know the case head is bigger on the other two which is why I was asking about the 6.8 bolt fitting in a .223 carrier

so i looked into the .338 whisper and came across the .338 spectre-based on the 10mm magnum case. seems like a better option due to brass availability, and the fact that is uses the 6.8 bolt. Anyone done one of these up?

Also came across my original idea- already been done (of course) its called the .338/.223 straight and seems to work but has some issues with powder capacity with these 300gr bullets, so thats out- need to hit 1100fps. If it shoots slower or use lighter bullets might as well use the .300 blackout

If you want big and close quarters, you can try what I shot, a 50 Beowulf in an AR-15. A light gun, that thing kicked way too hard. I shot 5 rounds and was done. The 338 Lapua Mag I shot next with muzzle brake was a lot more pleasant to fire.

I love my 300 blackout (I actually have a little different version) but it does everything I want it to do. Just placed a Mark 4 scope on my bolt gun so it's easier on the kids to hunt with at close ranges while shooting subsonic rounds. NO recoil what so ever even with supersonic rounds. My 10 yr old shot his first deer with it at 30 yards this year. You can find out all you want about this round at the link below.

http://www.300blktalk.com/forum/index.php

I shoot the 200 and 220 grn bullets at 1050 fps to keep them subsonic through my can, and the 130 grn soft points at 2222 supersonic. Others are shooting the 110 grns around 2500ish fps.

if you want to run subsonic only, and need some punch, let me suggest a little something different. I shoot a 200 grn Lehigh Defense Maximum expansion bullet out of my blackout at 1050 fps. This bad puppy turns less energy, and uses more intellect to do as much (or more) internal damage.

The thing about going with the blackout, is others have already paid for all the testing, barrels, bolts, and magazines combinations and they have told you what works best. Now all you have to do is configure the gun for the way YOU want to use it. When you start tricking up the AR platform with different calibers, rails, lowers, etc etc.... they dont always work in tune with each other. Even when you try to do subsonic 300 blackout, you will need to change springs, buffers, and some times magazines to make sure it works smoothly. The guys over at AR15 or 300 blackout have already done that for you.

good luck with your project. It's always fun to plan, dream, and build a new gun.... but it's more fun to shoot it, and shoot it well.

They are just shortened .223/.222 cases. Or you could neck up .300 BLK cases.

The 6.8 bolt fits in a .223 carrier.
