what cartridge is US F-Class Team shooting?

Perhaps a better choice still would be the triple deuce...cause we all know that is the most accurate caliber to ever be shot... ;D

As we all know from various internet shooting forums, there are literally dozens of calibers for which shooters have developed loads that will "shoot sub-half MOA all day long...as long as I do my part". Any of these should be a reasonable choice.

lol, right on, that might be the most over-used and cringe-inducing phrase in the shooting world today. It's my own personal B.S. indicator.

but...but...its true ;D

my phrase is different..."shoot sub 3/8" MOA all day...as long as I do my part, the barrel doesnt heat up too fast, the fouling in my barrel doesnt screw up my group, the wind doesnt pick up all of a sudden, the mirage doesnt lie to me, my cat doesn't bother me when loading charges to within +/- 0.01gr, or berger quality control slips and i get a bullet weighing heavier/lighter than the lot" :P

30-06 would be a good choice because as we all know, if we got in a pinch, we could buy ammo anywhere. ;)

Erik, that is indeed a valuable consideration and one that I had not thought of. I think it should weigh heavily in the decision.

Of course, another cartridge should be given consideration on that criteria alone; I'm talking about the .30-30 here and of course it should be fired from lever action rifles. That should produce some drama on the line, with some people cycling the action a la John Wayne in True Grit.

It might surprise some folks that the .30-'06 could be competitive with modern bullets. In a 32" barrel, and loaded with 230 Hybrids at ~2650 fps, the old '06 could compete well, having ballistics close to most 7mm F-Class cartridges and bettering 6.5 and 6mm loadings. Recoil would be moderate and easy to shoot with good barrel life. It is usually a mistake to discount the .30-'06. ;)

If that last post doesn't get German Salazar back onto AccurateShooter, nothing will!

As a Brit and of course a supporter of our national team, I'm 100% in favour of you guys adopting the .30-30WCF for the next F-Class 'Worlds' in Ottowa. SUPER cartridge!

Yes, but can you buy that load just anywhere?

Other than that, I have no problem with the 30-06. This is for the F-Open guys, I shoot F-TR exclusively.

I am under-qualified to be posting on this topic..... But I would love to see the 30-30 at 1000yards. Maybe a FTLA -class. Lever actions only and literarily barn side targets, broad side of course.

Not at my range...... We have a hard enough time with the BPCR shooters bouncing cast bullets sideways through the number boards in front of the targets and then claiming the rounds landed safely behind the number boards.

I,am with laurie 30-30 hell of a round , dont even bother to load any ammo , just nip down to le barons pick up a few boxs of ammo . while there get a fishing pole , couple of lures and go fishing after you finish shooting .
forgot to say thay usualy have some marlin 336 in stock (no need to bring a rifle ) .
conor .

Steve's reply is a serious one. I have been working with a 30" barreled 06 for a while using the 215 Bergers at 2640 using H4350. Would like to try 7828SSC but can't obtain any. I think it would give 2700+ range.

But Steve, much as I like the old .30-06, what MVs do you run with the 230 in your .300WSM F/O rifle? We've got one or two people here running the bullet in 308 Win / FTR at those sorts of MVs. That's always the problem with the Oh-Six - it's an FTR + a bit cartridge whilst F-Open ballistics are a step change higher. I see from German Salazar's writings that some US clubs allow the -06 into FTR class in club comps. Here in the UK, you're in Open even at club level, so there is no incentive to build a competition rifle for the cartridge, and lots of disincentives.

My WSM is currently running at ~2850 with 230's. I can shoot it reliably up to near ~2900. It can produce more velocity but that does no good if the recoil is unmanageable. Even at the current velocity, it requires constant attention and maintenance. Many shooters would be unwilling to tolerate the required effort level. [br]
The point was that an '06 with the right bullet and loading can be competitive in F-Open. It is within the required ballistic range and, while not a chart topper, could win when well handled. [br]
As far as getting those velocities with a .308, we cannot reasonably do that here. US shooting season temps, in most locations, run around 90°F+. (32°C+ for the Imperially challenged, or those who have forgotten their roots ;) )

I think Jean preferred the 20 Vartag. Rob Reiner liked the more manly .221 Fireball and Sally really liked the .577 Tyrannosaurus, for some reason.

Meathead had no recommendation.

Strangly enough that the .221 FB should be mentioned . I just mailed out a cartridge box for that caliber to a fella in Dresden, TN., along with a .22BR. I kinda think he's shooting critters from his tractor while he's working the fields.
Anyway, it's all entertaining....
