What caliber for my new barrel?

I am in the process of getting the new 26 inch barrel in 30 caliber for my Rem 700. It used to be a 7 STW. What fast .30 caliber would you guy put on it? I would like to have good quality brass available for it, its my main concern.

Since you already have the "caliber" figured out, I recommend chambering the barrel for the 300wsm cartridge.

If you want more speed, 300rum.

.300 Norma has my vote! 200-220gr. bullets it will push them 2950-3000fps. For a 24" to 26" barrel and keeping pressures at normal it will smoke the .300wsm and .300RUM but you will have to open up the bolt face.

The other question I have that can influence the decision is what are you using the gun for? Also single shot or repeater?

It used to be a Rem Sendero, added the McMillian stock with magazine feed. The 30 caliber barrel is a Bartlein as well. Just need some opinions on what caliber to chamber it with. Mostly long range hunting and some local 1,000 yard matches. Berger is my bullet of choice. Is the .300 Norma brass good on availability?

If one can't hit it and kill it with a .300 WSM, one needs to take up tennis. Or something.

One man's opinion.

If 1000 yard matches are in the equation, I would do the 300 WSM. It will run 2850 with H4350 and 210 Bergers and holds a lot of records in 1000 yard benchrest. If you want to hunt with it you can get 3000 with a 215 with 7828SSC. I would never open up a Rem. sized bolt for a 300 Norma case or Lapua case. Matt

+1 . Not a good idea to run Norma or Lapua on a 700 action. To much bolt thrust IMO.

Just out of curiosity, what did you not like about the 7STW that a fast 30 cal. will improve?
I had the STW for 20 years, 3 barrels and now it lacks of good brass availability, Nosler brass was bad because it would not close the bolt on 25% of the NEW sized brass and 50% of the brass it would be snug and hard to close. Each Remington and Norma brass I have used closed just fine. My dies were checked and adjusted properly. I found theat measurements from the belts to the face of the brass has some variation. Brass has been scarce. It's reason why I want to go up one step. I also have a custom Sako M995 7 Mag with a 26 inch Brux barrel that shoots 140 Bergers at 3250 to 3300 fps and 168 VLD at 3050 to 3100 fps under .3 MOA , I have a fast barrel. So I already have a fast 7 mm but not a fast 30 caliber. I do not want to open up the bolt face either.

I am kicking around the idea of a 7Rem Mag or a 300WIn Mag. If I can accurately get my 24" barreled 280 AI to shoot the 168 VLD over 2900 fps, I may scrap the idea.
