what CALIBER do you shoot 500+ yards?

500+ in what! There are VERY few 22 cals winning anything at 500 and greater. If you're looking for an honest answer for an accurate 500+ rifle a lot of these jokers are sending you down the wrong path, period. The 6BR and all the improved versions based off that case along with the 300WSM pretty much dominate Benchrest style competitions from 500 out to a 1000.

Not saying others can't be competitive, but the 22s' and AR's just don't cut it.

How long is a rope? I think that you (the OP) have seen that if you want to go 500yds and not much more just about anything will do. If you want to go way over 500yds or want a tiny group at 500yds, or no recoil in your 500yd rifle or a 500yd rifle that the barrel will last almost forever, then a better answer can be given you.

Jeff certainly make the 6BRX work well. My favorite, it's a toss up, for a long time it was the 300WSM, the Dasher sure has been treating me pretty decent the last 2 years. Built on Bat's

6.5 Creedmore (Savage model 12), .338 LM (Savage 110 BA), and for when we get real serious about precision around 1000 to 1200 yards a Bob Green built 300 WSM with a Broughton barrel on a BAT Machine action.

Ive shot just about every caliber there is. Nothing smaller than .17 caliber though. At 500 yards thats not really far..

.20 cal
.220 cal
.240 cal
.257 cal
.264 cal
.270 cal
.284 cal
.30 cal
.33 cal
.35 cal
yada yada. They all can shoot to 500.

It's definitely a question that will stir up a bunch of controversy even tho it was only a question. Doesn't seem to be a question of which one shoots the most accurate or kills the best on certain game. Also is not one regarding any certain discipline in shooting. Seems to be just a question of what do guys play with at 500+ yards that shoots well ? Just that simple. Seems I remember a member using a .22 LR to shoot 500 yards and claimed he was proficient at it. That brought alot of doubt and controversy from others. With time and experimentation, just about anything is doable. As for this question of what do we shoot well at 500 + yards ? In the off season, I pull out my White Super 91 in 50 cal. Load 105 grains of loose pyrodex with a percussion cap( 209s do not shoot well for me) and head out to my 500 yard range. It shoots well for me. Practical, NO. Fun, YES. I may burn up 2 lbs of powder just playing and seeing how good I can keep groups of 10 bullets ( 300 Aerolite) at 500 yards on a 12x12" piece of paper. Most times I can put all 10 inside that piece of paper and many of those inside of a 6x6" diameter. To me its a hoot. I'm ready for a hot tub and beverage afterwards as that front stuffer puts a whoppin on a shoulder. For realistic 500 yard play , I love using my 223 mostly as it is pleasant to shoot and easy on the pocketbook. Shoots 69 SMKs very well beyond 500 and it's great on coyotes when I want to head out during the mating season. Just about any centerfire cartridge from 20 cal up accomplished this task easily with a few exceptions. Certainly the muzzleloader IS probably one of those exceptions. Try it out, it definitely is a challenge.

Oh everyone knows it takes a world class sniper to shoot 500yds. So it better be big or you will need something you know something in the same class as the M198.

For you guys shooting 500+yards, What caliber works well for you?

And curious, what make/model rifle do you shoot?

Shooting a Shilen DGR in an MPA BA Lite chassis with Criterion Barrels chambered in 22-250, 6.5x47 Lapua, and .308. They all work well, but the 6.5x47 requires a significantly smaller wind hold than the other two.

I have 2:
300WSM
338 Lapua

I don't like to be limited on distance or game size (never had a ground hog be too dead) the Lapua is plain gun when it gets real long and conditions get nasty, but the WSM is defiantly the nicer one to shoot.

223, 243, 25-06, 6.5x55, 308, 264 WM and soon, 256 Newton to 600
Past that, mainly the 264 and the 308. 142's in the 264 and 155's and 168's in the 308
