What Bullets will destroy or pock A500 targets?

If AR500 is shot smartly depending on thickness there is no need to use AR550. JMO.

I use AR500 5/8" steel at 400-880 yds. 6X47, 308, 6.5X284. Bullets put a VERY tiny dimple in the steel. I think these will last a long time. .223 doesn't seem to affect it, period. Lapua Scenar bullets, Sierra Match Kings...

We bought AR550. I looked it up before I purchased. All it said was "significantly more resistant than AR 500". They were right. We only have 300 yards and the 50 AP will still go through but everything else either makes a splash or nothing.

Keep the impact velocity below 2900 fps and they won't be damaged. In general, that's 100 yards for standard class rifles like 223 or 308. 200+ or 300 yards minimum for fast stuff like 22-250 or light 243 Win. Gongs swing when hit which helps absorb some of the impact. A solid mounted plate isn't as forgiving.

I recently got a 3/8" AR500 plate that was getting light pock marks at 500 yards with an impact velocity around 2000 fps. The manufacturer immediately sent a free replacement.
