What bug spray do you use?

I live in the south, we have no see'ums, chigers, ticks, deer flies, horse flies, mosquitos, yellow jackets, hornets, wasps, borer bees, and more.

I spray my bench, around my bench, the path to my target(s) and around my target(s) with permethrin, I use a thermacell at my bench, I use Jungle Juice from REI.

A word of caution, permetherin is a neuro toxin to humans. Spray it on and around your bench, and let it dry. You can spray your clothes with a dilute amount and let them dry.(great for ticks)
REI Jungle Juice is 99% deet also a neuro toxin, it is none to have bad reactions (dementia, tremmors, and death) to people taking atropine and other medications. Also it will damage or remove the finish on most stocks wood or synthetic.

I bow and turkey hunt and would not be without my Thermacell.

For nats and other flying pest we use vanilla extract. It works great, and you smell like cookies.

For those wanting to avoid Deet, try dryer sheets. Just rub them on the area to be protected.
They also work great for keeping mice out of your boat while in storage.

" Diethyltoluamide " still used today and works great if used correctly.

Howdy !

Whatever you get, I recommend you avoid the stuff Uncle Sugar used to issue you.
That stuff was / had in it " DEET " ... which can screw you up ! Was it " Permethane " ??

With sincere regards,

I was out one night hunting and before I headed out I had the window down on my truck. After about 15 min of being on the phone, I hung up and turned on the interior light and the headliner of the cab was full of mosquitoes. I thought to myself, let's see if this thermacell really works. I rolled the window up about 3/4th the way and turned the unit on. Within mins of the unit heating up, the cab was mosquito free. This was the only real world controlled test I have ever done, it was proof enough for me. But when I am out in the field I also use sprays along with the thermacell. Like most people I hate mosquitoes so anything I can do to get rid of them, I will try it.

I got tired of buying components for the therocell and gave it to a friend , but It does work well and many swear by it... We have a new buffalo fly problem that has everyone swinging with both hands around here and nothing wants to stop them that is a common spray. 2 years ago my neighbor tried Avon Expedion out of desperate during turkey season and it worked. It's a more potent version of the skin so soft ingredients that accidentally worked as a bug repellent. The stuff lasts for 8 hour or more but is greasy and smelly so you have to decide which is worse. Its cheap enough and a pump spray bottle lasts a long time. I think it ws around $10 or so for 3 bottles mailed to my house. That's about a 2 year supply of it.

When Maine's "State Insect," the dreaded Blackfly was really bad (about mid-May to mid-June), the guy up the road wore an aluminum colored hard-hat that he brushed with diesel fuel. He said it was an old trick he had learned while working on road construction. It was amazing, they were a-chewing on me some hard, but just buzzing around his head and sticking on that hard hat like glue. Now at $2.60 or so a gallon, that's really cheap fly dope! :)

Growing up in The County, we all used Old Woodsman. It worked.

Another plus for Avon Skin So Soft. I have been using it Scuba Diving for years and on top of keeping even "No-See-Ums" off, you smell good too.

Smell like what? Seriously the Thermocell works and it will keep the suggested 15' circle clear of flying biters. Cost a bit to keep going, but you dont need "stuff" on your hide. Cralwer are a bit different. I treat my clothes with the Sawyer brand of spray and it does wok on ticks and chiggers. The T-cell is almost necessary to survive while bowhunting on Md's Eastern Shore. Our mosquitos are just about as big as teal, but are too had to clean. Works well when fishing too as long as its not too windy. Cant give a time of function since Ive used the same cylinder and pad several times in succession.
Another worry about DEET. It will damage sunglasses, prescription glasses, flashlites and a host of other plastic or coated stuff. I havent checked on polypistols, but they could be affected. Any painted surface can be damaged.

You can’t beat a bug tamer and Thermocell combination it is almost impossible to beat you here in Florida . Red bugs and ticks a Aspirin helps . You can Spray the bug tamer With DEET. Larry
