What brass for 284 win.

Should I neck up 6.5 by 284 Lapua brass or just buy 284 Norma brass... How about Winchester also thanks for your help.

I bought Norma, when it was readily available. Might still be, haven't looked in quite a while. No complaints so far, other than price.

When i need more, i'll get the Peterson brass from Grafs.
They have exclusive selling rights.

I've been shooting necked up cardboard box Lapua without issue for several years. With that said, I have several customers that complain about the primer pockets going south in a couple of re-loads with the Norma brand. One of them I shoot with regularly and I know he doesn't hot rod his ammo. I just purchased 150 pieces of Peterson brass for a new bbl. I have not shot it yet, but if its anywhere as good as their 308 brass, I'll be quite happy. I hope this helps,

Lloyd

I have 200 pcs of Winchester brass in my current .284 barrel rotation. I am running the Berger 184 at 2750 fps in a 28" barrel. Pockets are holding up well thru 5 cycles and I have been pleased with accuracy and consistency to this point. I run the base of the bullet above the neck shoulder junction but to this point have not found any donuts forming in this brass.

This hasn't been true for quite some time. Peterson got enough complaints from the reloaders about single source supply that they opened up the representation to several retailers. The choke hold though is still in Peterson's hands since the prices are controlled for everyone.

Norma is great....if your chamber is cut to accommodate the smaller base diameter of Norma .284 brass. If not then you will likely experience 'clickers' on the top of bolt lift if shooting any load stouter than what I would consider mild and your primer pockets will open up a bit early on. If you have the reamer spec'ed tighter than standard at the base then the Norma brass should work as well as Lapua and Peterson...it is good quality without a doubt. I will say that the Peterson I have switched to (did not want to regrind my reamer for Norma) has 4 firings at speeds up to 2850 with 184 Bergers and the pockets are almost as tight as the first loading.

As raroin said above, it depends on what your chamber was cut for. Based on my collection of unfired 284 brass, at approximately the 0.200 line they measure:
  • Winchester: 0.4960
  • Norma: 0.4971
  • Lapua: 0.4983
  • Peterson: 0.4989
My unturned necks loaded measured:
  • WW: 0.3140
  • Norma: 0.3151
  • Lapua: 0.3126
  • Peterson: 0.3163
There is quite a difference dimensional between them. I have one reamer for the WW and Lapua brass and one for the Peterson and Norma. I have no complaints with the WW brass. It is not as uniform as the others but it still shoots well and holds up fine. I have had over a dozen firings before retiring the barrel/brass and it has held up pretty well. Id say I culled about 5% due to loose pockets.

I am now moving to try Peterson.

No complaints with Norma. Have ran about 2000 pieces so far. Zero complaints. Pockets ok still at 9x fired. I had a custom reamer made so I’m sticking with them until these last 1500 pieces get shot up

Great data - was going with .318 neck and 250 fb for heavies in a Shehane, planning to neck up Lapua. Now considering the Peterson... would I need to turn necks a bit if I stick with that reamer?

Whatever happened with the 284 brass Shiraz (Grizzly.com) was having made a few years ago? Didn’t work out?

My WW/Lapua reamer has a 0.318 neck. I clean up the necks on WW and Lapua has shot fine out of it with no attention. My freebore is 0.235" A freebore of 0.250 should be great for 180+.

It is good brass but, as mentioned, many reamers have the base dimension ground for brass about .001” wider at the .200” datum to shoot Lapua brass. The Norma brass once expanded to this chamber dimension will retain that diameter even after fl sizing and produce heavy ‘clickers’ upon extraction. A small base die helps but I still had the issue with probably 1/5 cases fired at 2800-2820fps with 180-184 hybrids. I should have realized the difference in base diameter before specifying my reamer. That one is on me:oops: Anyone want to by a couple of thousand new Norma cases;)
