What Bears Can Do To You

Do not look at this if you are remotely squeamish.

Alaskan friend met this guy. While hearing his story he looked close at the guys face. He is a 7th Day Adventist, no drugs, he wouldn't allow it. He did the whole surgery without sedation or anesthesia after being taken to hospital on a snow machine. Unreal. The guy has damage with only one working eye but he made it.

Always think of this when people hunt in bear country with archery and smaller equipment. You need that big-bore backup.

Pretty sure this is the same bear attack that included a video of two guys on Ski-doo's harassing a bear until the bear turned on one of the guys and took him off the sled.

Edit: Apparently, this is not the guy in the harassment video I watched a few years ago. My apologies to anyone whose feelings I hurt.....

And always remember, in this time of "totally twisted logic" you may be 70 years old, and the bear is 10 years old, but he was here....first.
Whatever that tortured observation might add to the conversation.

Never read or heard anything about the hunters harassing that bear. Just contacted my friend in Alaska that was talking with him to see what he knows.

For now I would not take that issue of harassment as gospel. Searching for proof.

Giant BS....

Here's the truth...

HIs name is Glenn Bohn. He and his son were doing a spring grizzly hunt up near Denali Park. Glenn spooked a big male boar that was still denned up in the snow, and that it came roaring out and charged him, he managed to get one shot off before the bear was on him, he said it was that fast. He remarked at one point he grabbed the bears tongue and gave it a yank. His telling of the sound of crunching bones was hair raising. The dude was 77 or 78 years old when this happened. What a tough old goat!

His son ran up with a .454 Casul pistol and killed the bear.

Also read about the lodge he had contracted with to do the hunt and the main and assistant guides involved. Crazy how some people throw out stuff and others run with it.

I lived in bear country for three years, Naknek Alaska. Had a few experiences with them, nothing too crazy but sobering enough, it’s crazy what they can do to you in a short amount of time. Every year there would be a bear attack or multiple bear attacks in Alaska and stories would grow every time someone retold it I think. Pretty ridiculous how people can use someone’s misfortune to promote their own agenda. Glad he survived, glad his son was there and I hope his recovery allows him to live a good quality of life.

OK, your friend didn't harass bears with snowmobiles like the video I saw a few years ago. but the result was the same, a guy missing most of his face.

BTW, I've spent about 3 months of my life up near there, about 30 miles East of Denali off the glacier, hunting over the years. I've done spring grizzly as well as fall grizzly. Interior grizzlies are the real deal.

Don’t think I want to go bear hunting. Seems sort of dangerous. But, to each his own.

Do you get special training before these hunts?

I was in Yellowstone Park many years ago. When I was there a guy went trout fishing, at dusk he was walking thru a wooded area back to his camp. He was carrying a stringer with trout on it. A grizzly bit him on the head and popped it like an egg shell. Bottom line don't carry food in the woods in grizzly territory at night.

He noted that he was wrong about the story and these men were not the ones harassing the bear. Initially I can see where this can look like the story of the harassing bears on ski doo's. Correction was made in the same post.
