what barrel length for a 6mmbr?

I am pondering with the idea of rebarreling an old 22-250 700vls into a 6mmbr ( 1in14 twist shooting 60something bullets)I want a good hog gun and an casual target shooter I'm not worried about benchrest rules so anything goes. What seems to be an ideal barrel length it won't be carried far so weight doesn't matter I know a remmy doesn't have the depth of threads a custom action has so is that a factor? Being from virginia I was thinking clay spencer for the gunsmith.

I would go with a standard varmint barrel of 26" with a light or heavy varmint profile, depending on your preference for weight. If you want to preserve your Remington stock, then you may want to consider a Sendero profile.

I own three 6mmbr's a custom 700 set in a McMillan "F" Class stock with 28" #17 Pacnor 8tw, another 700 wearing a H&S stock with 26&1/2" HV 13tw Hart and a 23" LV 12tw flutted Krieger that a complete Kelby built rifle on a Kodiak action for huter class. The flat 2&1/4" wide forearm on the Hunter stock gives up very little to the 3" wide McMillan and is better ballanced then the H&S stock. The LV contoured barrel lends itself to a very well ballance rig that a joy to use in a deer stand or as a calling rifle. It's by far my favorite of the three.

Thanks for the input. Spencer reccomends a 14 twist and sticking to the variety of various 60-70 gr bullets

You may want to have a look at the Berger Specifications which includes a recommended twist. 60-62 flat base are no problem in a 14 twist, and by cutting into some of the safety margin you may be OK with the ones Berger says need 13 twist, but you will be somewhat at risk. If you can get a 13 twist that would be a safer choice if you want to go up to 70 grains. That said, I believe many 6PPC's shoot 68's in a 14 and do very well with it.

The other thing to watch is throat length. It is easy to get a 14 twist barrel for light short bullets, but you also need a reamer with a short throat for the short bearing surface bullets.

Antitactical the reason clay spencer recomends the 14 twist is because it is the best choice for what you are doing and he knows that.I also reccomend the 14 twist. I have had it in a 26" full Heavy contour on a rem 700 action so dont worrie about that.I have had a 24" heavy varmit that i had fluted also and the speeds out of the 24" have been very good, dont believe what guy's say about bullets you can shoot up to the long 70Gr burgers out of it,some guys have said they have shot 75gr ers out of the 14 but im not sure of that . but i am sure that any thing from a 55gr to a 70 gr er of any kind will shoot into a hole and you are not hurting if you go with a 24" tube, i have chrony'd 70Gr SBK out of my 24" tube at 3,550FPS and it is devistating out to @700yds on hogs .and you could load any of the custom 68 match bullets up and shoot them in to bug holes,i have shot .500 to .750 groups at three hundred yards with them,My buddy's 26" 14 twist, we were messing around one day and just for fun he shot a 3 shot group at 400 yards with a 65gr v-max that you could cover with a quarter.Every one i know shoots a 14 twist, i can say 5 guys i know shooting 14 twists most are 26" and every one om em would not part with them for the world.but with the light bullets you are not hurt with a 24" tube. I would reccomend if you are going with a select match grade SS barrel from one of the top makers
that you go with the 24" tube.you will never burn enough of a slow powder with the light bullets in the 26" tube, most of the 26" tube are clocking the same speeds i am. i have tryed and with a slow powder like AA2460 i was able to get a 150FPS faster but the accuracry was gone above 3,600FPS.so if you have a 26" tube you are ok if you have a 24" tube you are not hurt and wont see much differance with the light bullets.
