What bags or rifle rest for p-dogging?

Which rest is on top of your bench when long-range varminting? I shoot 204 and 223 so not looking for recoil reduction.

Thx

A Harris bi-pod with set of pod-paws on the bottom and a sand bag under the rear. While I have a front rest I don't like it for the amount of moving around I do when shooting prairie dogs.

Bipods don't reduce accuracy? Back in the day that was the accepted truth. Maybe that was before free floating was so widespread as it is today.

You may be very surprised at how good a rifle will shoot off of a bipod...
I use a front rest a lot while groundhogging but it's a PITA.......
When shooting rounded foreends I really like the BullsBags for varminting...

This is what I do.

The X bags area great. Very fast and accurate to use. I like them over a bipod or bench set up and I've used them all.

I am a high volume shooter when it comes to PD and I only use Harris S series bipods. These come with the legs that pop out and you have to manually push them back in. They are spendy but worth almost every penny.

I have used all different types of rests. All they do is slow me down. I have had many 1,000rd days and it is very hard to get that many shots off if you are playing with your setup for days in-between shots. This summer I have only shot a little over 2,000 rds in the few times I went out. Normaly it is in the 4,000 to 5,000+ round range

Granted if I was cranking in the scope for every shot I would want to be as steady as possible. I move around a lot and it is very easy to keep the dogs within 300 to 400yds on the long side.

I do take longer shots as I do have a 6mmBR and a 22-250 but I find I get to shoot far more ammo if I can keep them closer.

Thanks for the replies. I may start out with the X bag and see how that works. Is bulls bag any better than the Caldwell?

I shot a lot of them with a CLAW this summer. It worked great out to about 400 yds. Much more versatile than any benchrest set-up. I took that too and it was tedious compared to the CLAW.

When hunting open country, I typically carry a full size carbon fiber tripod with me,Velbon El Carmagne) and so the CLAW allows me to make extreme long range shots in environments that aren't conducive to prone shooting.

Preacher is right about bipods. During a 1988 demonstration in southern Oman, I shot this minute-of-Rover group off the bipod at 1600 meters. Weapon was a prototype Barrett 82A1 shooting FN-manufactured Raufoss APEI.

The Colonel bitched a little about setting it on fire. ;)

We didn't see any of the Yemeni varmints that were causing problems. :,

I for one like to keep it simple and mobile.... Just toss it in the bed of the truck and move on to other locations in seconds ;D

Bipod at times, a Caldwell bag at times & my Bald Eagle with windage top. It just depends what rifle and how I am shooting..

Sugget starting out with a bipod, the Harris 9-13 is a great bipod and you can always use a bipod. Then get a caldell bag or bullsbag and replace the filling with the white styrofoam pellets so its easier/nicer to carry. If you find yourself shooting off a bench, you can use the bag on a bench and then eventually invest in a good front rest.

When shooting off a table, I rely on a large "Dog Gone Good" bag, with my left fist under the rifle's butt. Moves and sets up adjusts quickly when mutliple targets are up, waiting for their lead pills.

The most comfortable shooting I have done was with a Caldwell front rest and a Shooters Ridge rear bag from a good bench. I have a Cabellas folding collapsable shooting bench for portable shooting. I shoot a Savage 12 VLP that weighs 12# with scope so I'm not carrying that rig very far. A friend of mine shoots a Ruger M77 with a Harris bipod and loves it. I would have to say it depends on the rifle your shooting and, the intended method, to make a decision on which way to go.

Harris Swivel Bi-Pod and a rear bag works for me.
I don't notice any loss of accuracy with a bi-pod,, but then I'm not that great of a shot either..
Ignorance is bliss. :)

Thx

I use a car scissor Jack with a steel plate welded to the bottom and top. Lace a front bag to the top. It moves up and down very fast and can slide from side to side to. You buy new jacks at car junk yard for $20.00. A welding shop did the plates for $20.00. You can use plywood in place of steel.

For stationary shooting I've used a Benchmaster rest off of those plastic folding tables. The Benchmaster has adjustable feet so you can set it up level on the hood of your truck too. The tables are only semi stable, but the hood of the truck can be almost rock solid if the wind isn't blowing 30+ MPH.

I have a tall Harris bi-pod and it works okay. It isn't the swivel model, and I think that would be an improvement, but I've seen my buddy struggle keeping the swivel gizmo tight. I like my Stoney Point shooting sticks the best for a portable rest. A cheaper alternative is the Bi-fur pod that can be found on the Varmint Al website.

My latest thing is an old camera tri-pod that we lost the head for. I scabbed on a towel wrapped 1X3X8 piece of wood, and it is shaping up to be a light weight, extremely stable rest. With the 3 inch wide platform, I can balance my flat stocked target rifles on it. Normally I don't take target rifles into the field because of the ackward 3 inch wide flat stocks, but this year I think I will give it a try. If anyone is interested I can post pics.
