What bag for F-T/R

I'm finishing up my F-T/R build right now. I have a McMillan XIT stock on a .308. I need to pick up a better rear bag than my squeeze-bags I've used in the past. What recommendations would you have for this combo? Should the stock touch the bottom of the bag, or should it ride the ears?

Thank you in advance.

Much appreciated. Eventually, I plan on a Phoenix bipod or Joypod, but for now I'm going to slum it with one of my PRS bipods.

You will find rather quickly that something else will work better...lets just say been there done that.
Glad your taking part Sir...you will love shooting F-Class

Thanks! Yup! I used to shoot my PRS rifle in a few F-Class matches. Actually won a couple with it, but it’s far from ideal. What is your preference?

Not shooting TR , but when I started it was sorta mixed bag of parts and I did that for the first season
to get my feet wet so to speak..learned a ton. Had fun but strugled enough to build a full F-Class rig
and do it right. Shooting Open and my buddy has the Xit and a Phoenix and Protecktor rear bag, standard 4 inch and he says it sould be 3 inches to be optimal for him....so yea its sorta trial and error on what works for you and what fits your combo and your shooting style. He is still tryin to decide on trying a joypod or stick with what he has...so like I said its trial and error. Fortunatly you can sell used stuff fairly easy to someone else tryin someting different....enjoy the ride my friend.

For an xit, you want a STIFF flat bag, 3/4 wide opening. (Lenzi Best, Protektor, second best)

If you're going to use a standard bipod, you want a rear bag you can squeeze a bit...

When I'm using my standard bipod, even in "fun" f class matches, I almost always use this bag.

measure the underside of the stock to be sure
get the ear spacing to match the measurement
‘fill the ears first
‘then the main bag, and know, that Edgewood will need sand as great leather expands

protector not so much

Seb bags rock

there may be others

I use a Dima bag filled with heavy sand for my XIT stock. I use it in combination with a dead bottom bag and a joy pod. Make sure the rear bags sit on the ground directly or something solid.

Which Dima bag, is it flat our angled. I use the same combo of stock and joypod and am struggleing a bit to find the right rear bag

The bag used should depend on the type of bipod used. The OP did not specify the kind of bipod that has been used in PRS, but if it is a "traditional" Harris/Atlas-type bipod that is often used with pre-loading, an eared rear bag is a poor choice IMO. As @LVLAaron noted, you want a bag that you can squeeze to control elevation with a traditional bipod. Although some might find it possible to use an eared rear bag with a traditional bipod, I've tried it and found it to be a miserable experience, and one that I don't want to repeat. A squeezable or bean bag-style rear bag is the much better choice with a traditional bipod, IMO.

That being said, the eared rear bag is the clear choice with a ski-type bipod, as several people noted. Unfortunately, a quality eared rear bag can be pricey, so the real question is whether an eared rear bag is a good choice if the OP is currently using a traditional bipod. If the OP just wants to have the new rear bag for eventual use with a new ski-type bipod, that's fine. But I wouldn't buy one thinking it is also guaranteed to work great with a traditional bipod, because that has not been my experience with an eared rear bag. I am among the few that still use a traditional bipod in F-TR and I very much like the Triad Tactical Pillow:
https://triadtactical.com/red-tac-gear-tactical-pillow/. However, just like the scenario above using an eared rear bag with a traditional bipod, I would not choose the Tactical Pillow for use with a ski-type bipod.

I am shooting FTR with an Xit stock and just realized that the original bag I purchased, Protektor Dr long range bag, has the wrong spacing at 1/2" and is riding the ears rather than the bottom of the bag. I was under the impression that you should use a slanted bag with a stock that has a slanted bottom. If you don't mind can you help me understand the recommendation of the flat bag vs slanted? I would love to avoid a large collection of expensive bags lol. Thank you.

I think either flat/slanted would work with the XiT. The Stock doesn't have much slant.. A flat leather bag will eventually wear in. You probably need a 3/4" wide bag.

edit: I have a 3/4 slant protektor sitting in my shop I can make you a deal on if you're interested.

Sent you a PM.

I shot a match this past weekend and I suppose I did ok, considering conditions. I used my Harris bipod and tried both my squeeze bag and my old eared Protektor bag I use on my varmint hunting rifles. It isn’t wide enough, and obviously wasn’t ideal with the Harris. Some folks let me mess with their SEB rests and like the joystick concept, but no way to get one quickly.

I think I’m going to buy a Phoenix bipod before the next match and use my Protektor and see how it fares, and hopefully try an Edgewood after I recover from the $500 bipod.
