What are your personal rules when selling a gun?

It seems that when I want a new gun (right now its a Rem SPS 700 Sporter in 223 for a light weight knock-about woods gun), I find something else in my collection to sell...which happens to be my G30SF w five mags...

Why the G30? BC I have 3 other 45s (Kimber TLEs 3, 4 and 5 inch), and Glocks sell well. Plus G30 only has 48 rounds through it and hasnt left safe in 2 years...

Im hesitating though...My grandpa always said NEVER SELL A GUN...save up, and get what you want, but hold onto your guns...Im in a bad habit replacing old ones with new ones...

What are your thoughts...I want the 700...and have G26, G19, G27, G23...but just dont want to give up my higher cap G30 cannon...even though I have 4 other Glocks...

Ugh...so many guns, so little budget

same rules about guns as about stuff in storage... if you haven't used it in the past 2 years then get rid of it... the longer the gun sits in the safe the less chances that it's ever going to be used...

If you buy guns to collect and look at them, that's OK, but these days, your money would earn more in the stock market. They are not as easy to sell as you might think. I know, I have been selling a collection for almost 3 years, and my profit is very small.

i agree with tenring...i personaly just sold a huge amount of my collection and narrowed my safe down to only those that have seen use in the last 5yrs. It just dawned on me one day that I find myself always picking up the same 2 rifles to use for the various types of hunting i do....i took the money from those guns that have been just sitting around and purchased a really nice rangefinder and 2 high end scopes for those 2 guns that always get used. So far i havent missed those that i sold but i imagine ill look back someday and wish i had kept a few more but such is life

I maintain a core group of mixed caliber and guns for different needs,
Beyond that I swap, trade, sell and buy always looking to fill a need or upgrade.

I'm the "anti-pack-rat." If it has not been used in a year, it's on the short list for sale. Sell it and anything else collecting dust. Now, the gents with M1 Garands in their safe might have a different answer for you. ;)

I pick the one least used and sell that. If you dont really want to seel your glock, pick something that collects dust and sell that or just buy outright the sps. They are cheap at Dicks sporting goods and other outlets that offer good discounts.

I sold three of my rifles in the last 10 days.

I have too many of them, I can't stand for them to sit there, I am building two more at the present time, I can't shoot all of them, and most of all, I can't keep supplies for ALL of them!

Probably going to sell two more after I wipe the dust off of them.

I once was a terrable hoarder on guns, ammo, reloading equiptment and all. I have been cured ;D I don't know the answer to your question. I am not a collector of firearms nor do i want more than i am going to use. Now their are some that really just don't get used....like the 1 near buy waiting for the burgler or the scatter gun with the buck shot. But for the most part i do not have the stuff i used to have because 1 thing is i will reload for everything and i do not want to reload for everything i used to have in all the different calibers. For some, to many is not enough and to other a few is to many.

I agree with all the above. If it's not being used or you'll never see yourself useing it then sale it.Me I have one rifle that my baby girl ( just turned 12 ) started shooting. When she wants to move up in cal I'll then build my first rifel.Other than that it would have been gone a long time ago.

if you don't have a rifle yet, then sell a pistol. Ditto if you need a shotgun. Or get a 2nd job, and buy everything you want. Everything I have is for sale, except our pets. It's just stuff, and can always be replaced. Nothing beats money in the bank after you have guns/ammo on hand.

I agree with tenring, it's not that easy to sell guns these days. Especially customs or high dollar items. My number one rule is try to sell within state first. It's the easiest way. Then I move to out of state which is always a P.I.T.A.
For a Glock 30 I'd try to sell myself first, then go the consignment route next. $500 handguns especially Glocks are not that hard to move.

I agree with everyone, most everyone, here. If not using it move on. 4 Glocks for two hands? My personal safe looks odd though. 2 @ .308, 1 Rock River AR, 2 @ .22 (pistol and rifle) and a wheel .38 for personal defense. I subscribe to the K.I.S.S. principle. If it moves it will break or jam. fewer moving parts is better always. But everyone knows this is a very personal thing we do.
