What are you working on this winter?

I just finished installing a new upper on my AR-15 Precision (Varmint) rifle. My 700 Remington is at the gunsmith getting a new Krieger barrel. I will most likely end up at the range in February (I am in Iowa) to get things on paper.

I too need a warmer place to live.

40-odd years ago I stumbled on these things:

- so found a set of plans, gathered much of the materials, then set the idea aside for a number of reasons.

Then we moved in ‘13, the idea - and stuff - came along, while the new place moved to spot #1 for my ‘free’ time. Has more space though, so when I learned in 2016 of an outfit making cnc’d kits that had designed this:

- I bought the first kit the day it was announced. 17’ long, 3’ wide, ~ 90 lbs.

After so long a time I realized I just wasn’t up to working from plans. Much too much time & work going from templates to building from scratch, so a pre-cut kit really struck a nerve. And my wallet!

Beginning of last month I got going finally. It’s looking a lot more like something that’ll float now than a pile of plywood now so I’m motivated to stay with this.

Shooting’s gonna take a back seat for awhile I suspect....

Just Finished up this 17 Lb. Light-Class “wind-tamer”
Switch barrel rig on a BAT Model M action. -calibers are 338 Lapua Imp. (2 barrels - both threaded for the brake) and 300 Norma Mag. Imp. (3 barrels) - Stock is a ST1000F, Bix Trigger, NightForce straight 42x cross-hair with dot.
Plan is to see if we can get 250 gr. 338 Berger OTM match bullets to shoot in the Lapua Imp. And 230 gr. Hybrids to shoot in the Norma Imp.
She weighs in at 16.9 with her fatest barrel.

I'm getting 2 rolling blocks stocked. My 22RF roller is in the hands of John Holliger at White Oak Armament for a stock. The 7X57 is out to Nick Hughes and he is working with Mike Kuffler (American Custom Gunmaker Guild) on the stock. I have a #2 Roller with metal work done in 32-20 that needs the original stock redone or replaced and color cased and rust blued. I'm building a much despised 6.5 Creed for a young friend. It has a new 700 receiver, Shilen trigger, and a #4 contour Shilen barrel 8 twist ratchet. I'm looking for a conventional hunting stock for it.

Do you have any pictures ? Your projects always have nice wood and fine craftsmanship.

A welcome relief from black stocks.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Years

Hal

Thanks Hal. All of my photos are in limbo. Tinypic and photo bucket are no longer hosting mine. Picasa will not allow me to email or post photos. I hope to have help fixing this problem after the first of the year.

I started my latest build when I purchased a couple used 6.5 SLR barrels from a member off this site. I have a 6.5x47 Lapua but it is a 22 lb. F Open rifle, so I thought I would put one together for hunting. I have a couple 700 actions laying around so I decided to use a long action that I could make a switch barrel, I have a blank coming to spin up a 22/6MM AI.
I started by cutting off the barrel because the SLR is longer than the Lapua and turning the OD and threading it 1.062-16 TPI. Everybody likes pictures, Right
Then I counter bored it and chambered it. When I chucked it up and checked the chamber for runout it was just .001 so I didn't bother dialing it in with my chambering fixture.
Next I decided to pin the recoil lug. I just stuck with the factory recoil lug, the 6.5 doesn't recoil much.20191210_162252.jpg 20191215_132846.jpg

Then I went to work on the bolt. I drilled and taped it for a 10/32 socket head cap screw that I had already drilled a .063 hole in it. I counter sunk for the head of the screw .040. Then I machined it off flush with the face of the bolt.

Left knee, eye floaters right eye.
Rebarrel one of my fullbore rifles, build a long range muzzle loader on a 700 action.
Hopefully be able to shoot prone by May, no XTC this year.

Now to machine the bolt handle down to be able to install one of the tactical style bolt knobs. Once it is turned down it has to be threaded 5/16-24 TPI

Not to time the brake ( I am using one of Ross brakes ) Once it was timed I turned it down to match the barrel OD, then sand it down to look it's part of the barrel.

Then I bored it about .025 larger than bore Dia.

I ordered a stock from Stockys when they had 10% off, if you register on their site and put it in your cart and leave it there for a day, they will offer you free shipping ( saved $25. ). I also ordered the Magpul box magazine set up for it. It just took a little work with a file in the corners of the magazine area to get it to fit in. It has an aluminum bedding block in it, so for a composite stock for $193. I thought I would give it a try. Most of my hunting rifles have laminated stocks.

The stock comes with a removable piece for larger barrels, but I still had to sand out just a little to be able to free float the barrel.
