What are the most popular caliber at benchrest competitions?

What are some of the top cartridges that people are using when competing at bench competition?

I have been designing some new equipment for precision shooting, and I need to know a starting base for which calibers or cartridges,

Of course, I will be working with 243 and 308 but I want to know some of the other popular cartridges.

Also, I need information about your top bullet choices,

I presume that most of you do your case prep at home and possibly even reloading, but I would also like to know what operations that you actually perform at the competition, I would presume that maybe you are doing some bullet seating and if so, are you using in line dies?

I have never been to a competition in fact I don’t even believe there have been any in my area, but I have reloaded since the mid 80s, tuning each round to the rifleand always tested the on my own range,
Thanks for all the info that you can provide,

I think most competitors that load at the range are short range B R shooters mainly shooting the PPC. The 30 BR is so easy to load for and not (temper mental) most load at home. Maybe some L R B R shooters load at the range as well.

If you are talking about Short Range Benchrest Group Shooting, the 6PPC is by far the most popular chamber. There is a scattering of 22’s, but they are scant.

If you are taking about Short Range Benchrest Score Shooting where best edge scoring is used, then any of the smaller capacity, 30 calibers are king. That includes 30BR, 30 Grendel, 30 PPC and a few others.

In Long Range Benchrest, being 600 and 1000 yards, any of the 6BR variants are hard to beat.

In UBR Benchrest Score, where caliber neutral targets are used, it seems the 6PPCis now the chamber of choice.

All of these are Benchrest Competitions as defined as Benchrest with a capital “B”.

I know the 6br, 6ppc and 30br have been around forever, I call these the old standbys, I wasn’t aware of the 30 Grendel in competition and thought maybe there was a newer generation of 6 mm that took over the bench rest like maybe the newer dasher, etc

In long range, the Dasher is still one of the best.

In Short Range Group or Score, (100 and 200 yards), it simply is not accurate enough on a consistent basis to go heads up against a 6PPC in Group or a 30BR in Score.
Just for info, the 30 Grendel is used by some because it will work in a rifle with a 6PPC bolt face. It is plenty up to the task.

I shoot long range benchrest and shoot a BRA in light gun and 284 in heavy gun. When my 284 brass dries up I’ll go to a bra for both light and heavy. But as far as most popular, 6BR, bra, dasher, 6.5x47 and 300wsm mainly dominate the equipment list. You can’t go wrong with any of them! I will tell you that a wsm in a light gun can be rough on you but man they shoot good!
