What ammo?

Hunting ground hogs with a 22 LR. What ammo would be good out to about 65 yards.? I am assuming the more speed may help with the 22LR. I am using some old Winchester power points. My gun likes the CCI velocitor pretty good and Eley hollow points. Not sure if the Eley have enough power.

My advice, FWIW, is go with whatever your gun likes and effectively does the job. If you can't hit them, it doesn't matter what the terminal ballistics are.

Good hunting. That has GOT to be some fun shooting.

With a few different hollow points I get less than 1” groups at 50-65 yds. Some shoot less than 1/2”. So I am more than likely going to hit what I am shooting at. Just wanted to know what round maybe the best killing ammo.

"Just wanted to know what round maybe the best killing ammo. "

That being said, I will 2nd the CCI 40 gr Segmented HP Mini-Mags. I've only tired a few but like them better than the standard 36 gr HPs.

Others have already advised the CCI ammo , but I second that you do a little testing and see what actually shoot well in your rifle... .22 are a picky beast and some just don't like some ammo period.... The only way to tell is to pick up a few boxes and try out the accuracy , that would be the absolute first thing I did.... It's a win win because you also get to spend some time shooting and learning what it likes... After that just pick one , hp , segmented , plain lead.... Once you find what you want put some away for hard times...

I thought I would elaborate on my earlier post.

I purchased a box of "Quik-shok" which is now the CCI segmented round, back when they were first made. I had the dubious task of shooting road-hit deer, sometimes three or four a week in Oct-Dec as a deputy sheriff. I had used a 40SW, and decided that it was worthless. No need to go into that. Instead, for safety reasons, i took to carrying a Ruger MK2 govnt in my duty bag. Injured deer, raccoons, beaver, and one very agitated rabid fox fell to that little 22. I never shot one twice, and all were DRT. The first was the fox, which had chased people about in a parking lot. It tried to eat my car. I worked a very liberal town. Shooting that fox at about 25 yards with a red dot and those Quik-shok was enlightening. I was prepared for a "running battle". What I got was Pop/plop. Didn't even twitch and I chest shot it! At first I thought I was lucky. Then I shot a pissed off coon, down and dirty, fast, in the back. DRT. Hmmm. I tried it on deer. Amazing results. The bullet never over-penetrated, never bounced, and every time the deer would bleed out while not even twitching. It seemed to go in the head and just fry every circuit. I once dumped a deer (a police complaint brought me) with a 25 yard head shot as it staggered about in the high rent district, after being mauled by a few poorly placed 12 ga rounds in deer season. Nearby landscaper witnessed the shot, saw the deer drop dead and he turned the air blue with a list of expletitives and a comment to the effect that he wasn't ever gonna get in a gunfight with a deputy. I credit the Ruger and the Quik-shok.

I nursed that box of shells for a couple years. Then CCi took them over. I bought a brick. I wish I had a dozen.

The sub sonic is ok...but the HV works great and I strongly recommend it. It is a field proven meat getter.

I also got the deer duty once , didn't think a .22 would kill one... Oh yes they will , one shot to the head and done... I am going to try and find and do a little testing on the segmented ammo...

Hey, your experiences more or less echo those of others I talked with about them. I'll give the Mini-Mag Segmented HPs a try here soon. Got a brick on a pending Checkout Cart now. I'm still using the S-S 40 gr HPs for "local" work where I don't want to wake anyone in the middle of the night.

I still use the Winchester Power Points for hunting. The new stuff seems to work just as well as the older ammo for me. It's good accurate hard hitting ammo.

really can't say what I would like to about someone that would use a 22 rimfire by choice when wild hog hunting! Yes, a .22 rimfire will kill the biggest hog that walks if the bullet is in its ear....so what?
There is a great deal of difference sitting in a tree stand with a good rifle and where one can pick a shot at undisturded hogs (maybe around a feeder).....and being on the ground with a mean boar hog. I have even seen on these Pay-To-Kill outfits....where they drove the Pay Person around in a pickup....and let them kill a boar hog, out of the truck, that was full of Monkey Dope.
I have also seen these "Hunters" kill an old sow and have her pigs follow along after their dead mother as they dragged her out....indeed!
Yes....The fellows here that hunt real wild hogs can make suggestions, but I wonder how many will listen? I say one more time....going up against a real wild Tusker is light years away from knocking over these feral knot hogs! You do not "hunt" true wild boar hogs...you go in and "fight" them!
