What all will I need for my 6mm PPC?

I bought a used custom rifle in 6mm PPC in an estate sale. Before the owner passed away he competed in PPC matches--the barrel still has lots of life in it. I won’t compete (been there done that) but will use it for varmints and general pleasure target shooting. It weighs about 10+/- pounds, has a Hart action with 1-13.5 twist barrel, and a Jewell trigger.

I picked up 100 new Norma brass cases, Wilson neck sizing and seating dies, but need neck turning equipment to turn about .0015” off the necks (".262 nk" is stamped on the barrel).

Does anyone have suggestions based on their experience as to what else I will need besides what I already have? I am an experienced reloader, but never have gotten into turning necks on brass.

Thank you in advance,
Gene

your going to need a neck turner.
There are lots of them out there I like this one.

Actually you need ...or its a good idea to trim all your cases to the same length before you turn so a case lenght trimmer would be a pretty helpful.

Gene: I've been using the Sinclair NT-4000 outside neck turner since it became available & consider it the best of all those I've previously used. I take my .262" neck 6ppc's down to .0085", for a loaded round neck diameter of .260". Using a .259" neck bushing, but mine is a bit undersized. Actual sizing diameter is .2585".

Gene,

Although you'll be turning to different dimensions here's what neck turning is all about: http://riflemansjournal.blogspot.com/2009/12/reloading-neck-turning.html and the tools [give or take some] needed for the job.

I don't use a tubing mic because all I care about is the neck OD of the loaded round. Since I have a .262" neck too, I look for .2600" at the bullet's pressure ring, if the bullet has one.

I recommend a full length sizing die for the 6PPC, but I'll let you discover for yourself, whether or not you need one. You're dealing with very tight tolerances with the 6PPC. Experience is the best teacher.

If you're inquisitive, get a copy of this: http://www.brunoshooters.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=BSS&Product_Code=TBSC . It's all about the 6PPC.

Buy 50 or 100 from Ron Hoen already turned and preped, and start shooting save the brass prep for later, you will have all winter to figure that out.

I would suggest that a carbide turning mandrel is more important than what brand of turner, and that the expander mandrel be matched to the turning mandrel, the correct amount larger. Beyond that I would pay some attention to the expander being larger than the ID of your out of the box case necks. If it is not, pick up an inexpensive Hornady, one piece FL die, so that you can make the necks small enough to be expanded to match the turner mandrel, all the way back to the shoulder. No bushing die will have that reach. If you don't spend too much on the turner, you can simply leave it set for that chamber, a dedicated turner for that one application. I have a K&M setup that I prefer, simply because it is the only one that I have with a carbide mandrel. I can do the job with the others, but the carbide is an improvement.

Recently I have decided to increase the neck clearance of my 6PPC rounds (measured over the pressure rings of bullets) to something between .0025 and .003. I have done so following the example of several notable shooters, from the long list that are better (shooters) than I. Because my favorite bullet has a large pressure ring, this has resulted in a neck thickness of .0079. Currently, I am using a .256 bushing, with 133.

If you are going to get the full potential from your new rifle, you will need a FL die. I would suggest that you fire and neck size a couple of cases at least three times with relatively warm loads, and send them off to Harrels Precision along with an order for a bushing type FL die. You might want to give them a call first. To go with your new die, I would suggest that you get a couple of carbide bushings, because they are straighter, perhaps you will want to do some testing with steel bushings to figure out what size you need in carbide, just be forewarned that the steel bushings may not be the exact sizes marked.

Do you have wind flags, and are you set up to load at the range? What sort of rest/bag setup do you have? What about bullets, and primers?
