What action for 6.5 4S?

Borden makes a nice mid size action that would work nice, they also make a great short action also. I just picked up a GunWerks action at a great price thats either going to be a 6.5 SAUM or a 6.5 SS, which is a wild cat based off the SAUM. The GUN WERKS action is very nice, smooth and locks up solid.

What is a 6.5 SS?

6.5 Sherman Short, a wildcat based off SAUM case to fit a short action better with heavy bullets. There is a lot of info on the long range hunting site.
Spent an hour looking at it. Funny I was just pondering that exact thing, talked to the smith about it a few days ago.
Is there a 7mm version?

I’m super happy with my 6.5 SAUM. it has a .178 freebore and no turn neck. I’m not looking at my load data but off the top of my head my 150 matrix are sitting at ~2.93 and the shank is not into the shoulder. Kills all the elk and deer I can manage to get a shot at. Mine is on a Winchester WSM sa I had and I’m not using all the magazine length. The round works great in a Wyatt sa magazine so any Remington or clone will work fine. A Borden intermediate length action would be superb also and leave room for longer bullets like the future 155gr 6.5 Berger.

Don't forget the Defiance XM action. It's an 'intermediate' length action also with a box accepting up to 3.2" which also handles the 6mm Rem. length cartridges quite well. It can be gotten with the standard or magnum bolt face and corresponding boxes.

Regards.

I built my 6.5 4S on a long action. I used a much longer freebore and my COAL would not feed from a short action.

Actually it was an older Rem 700 action that was a 7mm magnum that had been rechambered as a 7mm RUM. Don't think it got shot much after that as it must have kicked like a mule. I still have the original BDL stock which is extremely nice and the floorplate. The floorplate (and the action) have scrollwork on them which I think was common in the 90s. Some call it the BDL custom deluxe but I don't know if Remington ever did. --Jerry

It would be nice if someone would make Bottom metal/DBM for the med length actions such as the Defiance XM.

I ended up ordering a Borden Ridgeline, Bix & Andy tac trigger Wyatt box and machined Borden bottom metal.
I am sending my reamer in for modification. Print shows a .205" lead and a .188" throat.
I want to fit bullets in the magazine and reach the lands, planned to change the throat to .081" but am unsure about the lead. I'd appreciate some input. Talon

Why do you want the short throat when you picked up a Borden Ridgeline ? The .188 throat would be much better for the fantastic high BC bullets. .081” doesn’t use the magazine length available in the Ridgeline. I have a .178” throat and the longer .188 would be better imo. I like to use some jump to get the most velocity. With a no jump load you’ll kill your velocity due to pressure from no jump. IMO the point of the big case is velocity and stuffing the bullet down into the case and into the lands is working against the whole point of the cartridge and the action you ordered. The .081 of the 4s is about using in a standard short action magazine. I’m not a certified expert so maybe I’m missing something but I would be happier with a .188” throat than the .178 I currently have so I could stick the bullets out a little more and still have some jump to tune with.

I bought a .081 throat reamer because I am sure I'll be chambering barrels to mag feed. for my personal rifle I used a LA action and throated it to .180ish. --Jerry

My .178 should work perfectly with a Wyatt extended sa magazine. I can’t remember my current jump but the OAL of the load is 2.98” which I believe will just clear a Wyatt magazine box. It’s in a Winchester WSM Short action with a 3.05” box. I’m using Matrix 150gr vlds. The 6.5 saum is a great hunting round. Really happy with it.
Point being a long action isn’t necessary to get the potential from the round.
Edit ; 2.96” OAL. The pictured cartridge is a little beat from riding around in the magazine all hunting season but if you look you can see the end of the bullet bearing surface is still in the neck with the 150 Matrix.

Thanks for the input, waiting for the action and magazine. Was looking at the standard remington short action magnum box for the length. Completely forgot about the added length of the new mag well. Thanks for all the advice. God bless.
