What .22 Ammo Would You Use for Prairie Dogs?

22 magnum Hornady v-max if you are able to. If not I have used Remington Viper with success. Find what is accurate in your rifle first of any standard velocity or above.

I never saw the point of a hollow point on a low velocity round so I would eliminate them. I would choose the highest velocity round that my rifle shoots accurately.

You are stuck with a 36 to 42 gn solid slug, so hitting them is really the issue.

Hyper velocity ammo leads up the barrel very quickly, then accuracy is lost. Hyper velocity is rarely ever the most accurate.

I shot the 22 Magnum a LOT with 40g Winchester HP, which is a true jacketed bullet.

ON the std 22 Rim fire, I used the 40g CCI Mini Mag hp.

I have the CCI velocitors but they are not very accurate, lead in the barrel in this custom Ruger becomes a problem quickly. Stingers also leaded up the barrel, along with some Browning Hyper ammo.

Rare to find calm days on a dog town, so the rim fires do a great job in educating the P. dog town, and for this reason, the 22 magnum rules the day.

CCI Velocitors out of my Tikka T1x at 50 yards 5 shots, the most accurate devastating 22 round out there.

Centershot,
Is this due to the fear of richochette? If so look into fragmenting subs - we use a lot of these in and amongst stock, mostly CCI. They don't give the red display or acrobatics in performance but very effective. From the counters we carry for tracking kills our results are in the thousands.

The young 45-year-ago me would suggest bringing a brick of ammo for every shooter for every day of your adventure. Nothing bummed me out more than running out of ammo before running out of prairie dogs. Now I’d probably do fine with 100/day, especially if it’s a 22 mag.
