Some of you fellas know i think to much, and probably talk to much, but thats just me. I love this sport and everything to do with it, including you people. With that said, something has been on my mind the last few days. I have all the Cal's covered in my collection except for a fast twist 22cal chambering. I would really like to have one. Maybe a 22br or a 22-250AI or even a 22 dasher. The problem i am having is, justifying the purpose of the rifle. I know we dont always need a reason, other than pure joy of owning a fine rifle. Well i already have plenty of those!! LOL!!! In all seriousness, were would a fast twist 22cal rifle fit in as far as a competition rifle goes? I know f-class has a class for 223, and 308, but i really dont think i want another 223. I have read some articles in Precision shooting about some fellas that build 22ppc's and 22Br's, but they always seem to go back to the 6mm sooner than later. I dont need convincing that i need a fast twist 22cal, because i will have one regardless the outcome of this post, before long anyway. I just thought someone with more experience than myself could shed some light on this subject. Some of the heavier 22cal bullets have some nice BC's and i think they would be a lot of fun, say out to 300-600 yards? I guess what i am interested in knowing, is what you fellas use your fast twist 22cal chamberings for? thanks guys! Lee

We see .22 BRs and PPCs in 600yd BR competition here in the UK and they give a good account of themselves against the sixes. In fact, Luke Wadsworth just won the opening round of winter 600yd Precision Rifle competitions on the upland and very windy Diggle Ranges on Sunday.

I've never fancied a .22 for this myself, but am giving .223 Rem a run in 2010 in F-TR. On the basis of Jerry Tierney's load development work at Sacramento, .223R with the 90ghn VLD should be competitive against .308W at 1,000yd.

Lee,

I know a few guys that shot 22 Dasher in IBS 600 yds benchrest and did very well. James Phillips set a few record the first year or so ( he is not shooting now) I think one record was retired and in the record book due to a target change.

I had a 22-250AI 8tw on a Savage m12, it shot very well. But all of them are barrel burners. Have a 223 Savage barrel 9 something tw, that i have hit clays at 1000yds. It is a fun round to shoot at long range.

I think the 6Br, 6BRX, and 6 Dasher are a better long range round, But A guy got to have just one fast tw 22. I would go with the 22BR, 22BRX, or 22 Dasher for the accuracy.

A friend of mine likes a 22-6mmAI, it hammers groundhog and shoots flat. Barrel life does suck, but it's fun while it last.

I am really impressed with my 6dasher and i think a 22 dasher would be a lot of fun for middle of the summer (no wind) comps. My smith doesnt have the reamer, and i dont think he will want to buy one. He might, but i almost hate to ask. I may have to buy one myself if i cant find one to rent. I have never rented a reamer before, and i guess its an ok thing to do. I guess what i mean is, is there any chances on renting a reamer and it will be worn out or anything like that? How many cuttings can you get from a reamer? I just need to do some checking around. I also think a 22-250AI would be a great chambering. Thanks for the info, i do appreciate it!!! Lee

Lee,

Some smiths will have you get the reamer, then do the work. keep the reamer and give you a break on the price. I would just ask your smith. You could get a reamer and sell it with you are done.

Thanks gunamonth. I kinda had that feeling. Marks, thats probably a good idea, and i even thought about that. I am really in no hurry to do the 22cal build, as x-mas is just around the corner. My girls are getting older and there wants are getting more expensive. My oldest wants a lap-top and my youngest a drum-set. Among all sorts of other expensive girl things! LOL!!! Why dont they just want rifles? Maybe someday!! Thanks fellas, i always enjoy reading what you have to say! Lee
