Well, the search for a hunting partner is on again.

Coworker has been my hunting partner since last year.
We were supposed to leave my house at 5am today for last day of PA deer firearm season.

4:45am, i get a text from him asking me to call him.
Lots of background noise. Along with a "shut up! I'm on the phone!".
Appearantly he, and a few other coworkers decided to drive to Erie to go to a strip bar.
"Been drinking & watching b@@bies all night. I'm gonna be 15 minutes late."

Come to find out, he's an hour north of me still. And has to get his truck from his house, which is 35 minutes south of me.

I informed him he'd be 2,1/2 hours late, NOT 15 minutes.
And with him drinking all night, and no sleep, i didn't want him near a gun or with me!

After the constant 30 minutes (or more) late, added with this morning, i'm done with him!

So, anyone in PA that is looking for a hunting partner...
I hunt mostly in Elk & Moshannon State forests, about 6 miles from Bennezette.

Wow. Never thought of that as a problem. Hunted with the same two guys from high school for 60 years.
If either one said 4:00 AM, the coffee would be on when you got there. Guess I had it good and didn't know it. Many, many times we left for SD or NM at 2:30 AM and they were waiting when I picked them up.

unfortunately I moved a couple of times and lost my hunting buddies. Just about to give up hunting because I no longer enjoy it by myself. A good hunting buddy is a true blessing

wow, sorry to hear that! sounds like he needs to do some growing up!

i have 13pts for Pa elk, which doesn't mean much the way the beanheads come up with that system.
how much do you follow the elk?

I know exactly what you mean Dub. Growing up I lived to hunt and fish but after my dad passed away it sure wasn't the same.

Sure understand.

Back when I lived and hunted in Pennsylvania I had close friends and hunted with many. Now ALL, no exceptions, are now dead.

Retired and moved to Florida in the late 1990's. Made friends here and started hunting in Georgia. Unreal but all 5 of them are now dead.

Recently made a few new friends for hunting in Georgia but it will never be the same. Sometimes I live in my memories.

You don't want me for a hunting partner.

Nothing like being in your stand, archery deer hunting and having a 6X6 bull elk grazing away at 20 yards.
Or the black bears for that matter.
Found 2 new spots for treestands for next year. Lots of deer & elk sign. Known bear den 1/2 mile away.

I have 12 points. With our system, may as well be zero.
Talked with a guy during early archery. Got drawn his first time putting into it. Coworkers of his had 13pts.

Kenny, sorry but LMAO. Great story, more detail than you gave me the day after. Actually I have found 1 good hunting partner in my life. We archery hunted together for about 35 years. Tell him we gotta leave at 2am, get there at 3:30 then 2 hours up the mountian to get up a tree by 5: 45 and wait for daylight. Oh, it's gonna be cold and rainy. Next morning he is ready waiting, a 1000 times, never late. A precious commodity. Many aborted trips from those who asked to go but could not hack the work. Hope you find a good one Kenny....but still laughing.

Those b@@bys will get you in trouble every time. Like the old saying goes “t@ts or tires you’re going to eventually have trouble”! Good luck on your search for a new hunting partner. I am fortunate that I have my son living close by and we still go out together.

I had a friend who I hunted with for over 40 years, never late, never cancelled for weather or any other reason. We used to hunt 3-4 days a week until I just couldn't go in the woods anymore. He still bugs me to go.
We brought along another friend twice and decided he wasn't fit to be in the woods with us, didn't pay attention to property lines, was not safe with a firearm and couldn't shoot for s**t. We stopped taking him even though he wanted to go. We found him in our spots with other friends of his a couple of times and finally told him he wasn't welcome.
First type of partner HARD to Find, second one dime a dozen.
Good luck in your search.

Over the years I've had several what you would call hunting partners. Most were ok but some were not.

I consider myself extremely fortunate because I have what I consider to be the two best hunting partners I could ever ask for or want, my wife and my son. We have been hunting together for years and I can honestly say we have never had any type of issue what so ever with anything.

I'm not saying friends cannot make excellent hunting partners, far from it. I've just learned over the years to choose them wisely.

We usually hunted coyotes with a 4 man team in the truck, and would take a novice as a 4th man from time to time. I shot p. dogs, chucks, ground squirrels with just two in the truck.

I have a lot great memories from some of the really good guys and a few horror stories. I shot p. dogs for 15 years with one guy, and he passed from Skin Cancer, never a cross word, never an argument, no matter how bad the weather was or truck break downs.

My hunting buddy was great. Out of it now since his stroke, but was far more interested in the preparations for the hunt than the actual hunt itself. He always packed enough food and such to have let the Donner party survive and get fat. Utterly reliable and always on time.
