Well, that's a frustrating failure

Base sizing my 260AI brass with a 45acp die and had the lip of my shell holder rip off! Yes, I did lap it lower, but took off only .008". Using plenty of imperial, didn't feel any more force on sizing that the thousands of other times I've done this. Never had a shell holder fail before!

I took the other route and removed metal from the bottom of the sizing die with a belt sander.

It will allow you to maintain the strength of the shell holder.

Well, shit. Hopefully that wasn't an off-spec shell holder, or you're gonna have to adjust everything to compensate for the replacement.
Good times.

It had a deck height of .128" according to my notes. I took it down to .120" to not have contact with the die.

Thats what I'm doing next, except in a lathe.

Buy a Lee .45 die. Cut most of the top off. Make a pusher that goes into your shell holder, and push your rifle cases all the way through the die, retrieving them from the top.
Foolproof.

The old RCBS 45 dies are same diameter all the way through and short, just would need to make a pusher for this one.

I'll echo what others have said, never saw that before in near 60 years of reloading.

Not saying this caused the failure, but I never did understand the reasons to modify dies and shell holders.
My tinfoil hat theory, Redding likes to sell comp shell holder sets so their dies are just a bit too long to work perfectly with other brands...
