I am one the early users of the .300 WSM (just over 15 years). I have shot back-to-back ping pong 8s in windy conditions in Phoenix. Nothing saves you except your wind reading skills.
Everything needs to be consistent (cheek pressure, the way you hold your gun, the way you shoulder it etc.) or you will see it on the target. I happen to put heavy cheek pressure by habit and have paid the price in broken teeth on the right side of my face, plus have had shoulder surgery as well - yes on the right shoulder. But you get used to it and continue to enjoy the sport.
Oh, and don't even think about shooting it free recoil without shouldering it. The rifle will up at Mid's feet in the office!
