Yup. They are. I needed some 205m primers. My local reloading store said I guy drove 1.5 hours from a very rich town and bought all 40,000!!!!! Its really aggravating. What is this moron going to do with 40,000 primers in the next few months, that he could not leave some for somebody else.

I've had people say the same thing about me. Most years I shoot between 10,000-30,000rnds of precision centerfire. Some years a bit less, but I don't remember a year that I shot less than 10,000 if it's a normal year. This is more than a "hobby" for some of us.

Election year. Virus panic. Shooting season starting.

I would really like to know, who's surprised about this run on ammo and components? Those that are surprised; are you new? I mean, this has only happened a dozen times in my adult life... who can possibly not predict shortages at this point?

Then to be upset at those that realize what's going on and stock up? I order primers in quantities of 50k minimum. I keep a rolling supply of somewhere between 100-250k on hand at all times. I haven't bought a damn thing recently. Don't need to. Powder, brass, bullets... I always have deep supply.

If shooting is just a hobby you engage in once in a while... then running out of stuff shouldn't be that big of deal to you. If it's more than a hobby, then you should have the foresight to buy in bulk when supply is plentiful at negotiated prices. It's time people realize how the world works rather than just assuming everything you want will be available at all times. That hasn't been true for a long while now. Shortages are nothing new for 20+ years. In a presidential election year, you can bet the farm on it. So take some responsibility. If you don't have what you need by now, no one is at fault other than you. I understand it's not fun to run out of things, but lets not throw contempt around so lightly when the situation can be controlled easily by a little planning ahead.

Kinda like that low-life that bought up all that hand sanitizer to turn around for a profit, before Amazon caught wind of what he was doing and banned him. Then he goes on the news talking about how unfair it was and how he was going to be able to get his family in a good place with this but now he's ruined.

Profiteers are despicable, and I'm frankly surprised that this kind of activity doesn't fall under the same laws and prosecution as war profiteering. Our county is in the middle of a pandemic.

30 years ago my father in law told me that some day the politicians will try to make all firearms illegal and then I laughed and thought he was a crazy old bird...well that crazy old bird was right. I started to reload and shoot about 5 years ago and in that time there has been a shortage on at least every reloading component at one point or another...even without an election year or a pandemic. The 3 main powders that I utilize are bought in multiple 8 pound containers and primers bought in at least bricks of 1,000 and same with projectiles, mostly to stay within consistent lots but in times like this i feel secure knowing I am sitting pretty for quite a while.

We live in the country so we frequently purchase food in large quantities as well as paper products in case we get snowed in or have terrible roads, i look at the loading components pretty much the same. In my mind there is a large difference between being prepared, hoarding and purchasing in bulk to price gouge others.

About 20 miles down the road is a huge Farm n Fleet store with a decent selection of guns, ammo, etc. About the size of a WallyWorld with stores in Iowa, Wisconsin, MN, etc. Shelves of CF rifle ammo that you can't hunt here with. Pallets of shotgun slugs that are way out of season. Pallets of half gallon pails of Rem 9mm ammo they call the range bucket. I shake my head and wonder who buys all of this. Have not been there in a few weeks, but the answer may be hardly anyone or everybody. Plus there's a Sportsman's Warehouse a mile up the same street and a Bass Pro several miles away.

Today I made a sojourn to said farm store. Still plenty of ammo on the shelves and range buckets of pistol ammo. A couple bare spots on the shelves, but I think only the most common stuff was sold out. Plenty of rifles in the rack too. Without even trying I found 4-5 Savage Axis left hand rifles for $320 apiece. Didn't look at handguns.

How many times have we been through shortages and scares. If you shoot and have been shooting more than 2-3 years and don't keep a year or so supply of stuff on YOUR shelf; well...

When it's not crazy and prices are good. Buy a few extra here and there through time and put them up (components have great shelf life). Rotate old stock out, but as you use something up. Replace it. Don't wait till you "need" something to buy it. Shortages come all the time but I don't remember many lasting more than a year. We've seen all this before, it WILL happen again. Put up a some supplies and next time you won't be part of the panic.

No specific direction to comments and please no one take the wrong way. But it's a circle that continues on and on... I just never understand people investing 2-3000 dollars in a rifle and not buying several hundred $ worth of components to keep it's value. A sharp stick has more use than a gun with no bullets...
