Weird looking squirrel

Looks like what we refer to here in N C as fox squirrel. They are all colored different than a regular squirrel and most are bigger as well.

I've seen a couple of coal black ones before while sitting in a deer stand near Brenham, Texas, and both of them were HUGE compared to any other squirrel, but they were definitely squirrels, gathering acorns and burying them.

There were some black ones east of me a few years ago. Have not seen them for quite a while. One of the city parks was loaded with all white ones when I was a kid.

When I was still hunting tree rats on a regular basis it wasn’t uncommon to have them multi colored. Shot a lot of reds that had grey legs.

We have pockets of Black Grey Squirrel, I guess in areas that are suitable for Greys. They are not what I would call common, but in those pockets. they are fairly numerous. I would say that Fox Squirrels are the more common one here, but I have never before seen one like in my picture.

Cool squirrel. It’s a fox squirrel. We had one around a few years ago just like it, except the tail had much more white in it. There was no hiding for him!! I’ve also seen a few that were mostly black on another farm in my hometown. I could never bring myself to take one. They were too cool to watch.

The other day I saw a weird looking squirrel.

We have a black variant of gray squirrels here in Pa. About 15 yrs ago the hollow across from my camp was just loaded with them for 2 years then they migrated out. I see them here and there all through out central Pa. They are not quite as large as fox squirrels. According to the PGC they are simply a color variation.

In Brevard NC, they have a White Squirrel Festival every year. From the pictures I've seen, they are a variant of a gray/cat squirrel. Looks like some cross with the local cat squirrels.

First squirrel I ever shot was a melanistic phase gray (black). Saw some really cute piebald squirrels in Missouri a few years ago. Regularly see black fox squirrels in western PA now. Never saw an albino squirrel, but have seen two deer that were full on albino. Several piebalds too. Unique creations of our good Lord.
